Please make note of the following uniform requirements ahead of the return to school in Term 2.

  • It is recommended that students wear the Winter uniform during Terms 2 and 3, however due to unseasonal and changing weather conditions, either uniform can be worn during non-specified terms. Please note that the full winter uniform may be stipulated for formal school events.
  • The College blazer is the official outer garment to be worn. If the college jumper is worn, it cannot be worn as the outer garment to and from school.
  • Students may wear the full sports uniform on days for which they are timetabled to participate in Physical Education or Dance classes or as instructed by staff. Athletic shoes fit for purpose are to be worn in all sports classes. Leggings are not to be worn as the outer garment to and from school.
  • Hair is to be neatly groomed, appropriate to the wearing of uniform. If hair is touching shoulders when sitting naturally, hair needs to be fully tied back and off the face at all times. When the hair is tied back, the accessory used must be maroon, green or white in colour.
  • If makeup is worn, it must be minimal. No excessive make-up or false nails are to be worn. Natural coloured nail polish can be worn.
  • Two pairs of silver or gold sleepers or plain, small stud style earrings (two in each ear), is permissible. No other jewellery on any part of the body is to be worn.

Please ensure you attend to any items you may need to be ready for the commencement of term.

Tuesday this week, saw the last of the Living Justly Reading Program for Term 1. A small group of Years 9 – 12 students volunteered their time before school to go and read to a small group (or listen to them read) of Prep – Grade 2 students at St Thomas Aquinas Primary School in Corio.

Thank you to the students who attended this week:

Alive T (Year 12), Maliha B and Liv M (Year 11) and Kaitlyn D M and Evie M (Year 9).

They met with some of the junior primary students who eagerly brought their readers along to read to our students.

Staff at St Thomas’ appreciates the work our volunteers have done this term and the students look forward to returning next term.

Great work everyone.

On Palm Sunday this year, April 2, a small contingent from ĢƵ attended the “Palm Sunday Rally for Refugees” in Swanston Street, Melbourne. Standing alongside other Kildare Ministry schools such as Killester, Kilbreda and Star of the Sea, the ĢƵ banner was proudly displayed in support of the approximately 12,000 asylum seekers denied full and unconditional visas to allow them their freedom and to remove the yoke of ongoing uncertainty under so-called “fast track” visas.

The crowd heard from speakers who outlined how these visas just continue the agony of uncertainty for these people. After listening to key speakers, the noisy and vocal march moved up Swanston Street, then up Bourke Street and into the grounds of Victorian Parliament.

This annual event raises awareness of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers and calls on our leaders for compassionate responses in their policy and decision making. Thank you to Michael McCallum for organising this for our community.

Further information can be found on the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project website

In week 9 as part of their Community and Connection Day, the Year 11 students participated in a seminar conducted by Drug Ed Australia. The program is aimed at students in Years 7 through 12. The objective is to teach young people about the harmful effects of alcohol and other drug use. These sessions are interactive and assist young people to develop skills and strategies to stay safe while socialising with friends.

We acknowledge that even though many of our audience will choose not to experiment with alcohol or other drugs, it is likely that they will at some stage be around others that do. A key component of our course is to develop strategies to avoid harm and to react when things go wrong. Often tragedies occur when young people do not know when to ask for help or what to do in an emergency. To combat this, we have developed “Six Obvious Signs to seek help”. Students learned about this during our session. Essentially Six Obvious Signs asks six questions that will help young people to identify an alcohol or drug emergency and guide them to act by calling a trusted adult or paramedic. We encourage you to discuss this with your child and other strategies, boundaries, and expectations you may have in regard to alcohol, vaping, and other drugs.

This session is aimed at opening the conversation between students, families, and schools, as we know teenagers who remain connected to their families and communities are less likely to experience problems with drugs. If you would like any further information about today’s session or other sessions, please feel free to contact us atinfo@drugedaustralia.com.au

New Victorian Child Safe Standards came into effect on 1 July 2022 in all Victorian schools. An important inclusion in the 11 standards is Standard 3: Child and student empowerment – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

Valuing young people and their rights is a fundamental aspect of this Standard, and aligns with ĢƵ’s vision for student participation which focuses on student voice, agency and leadership as the key elements which empower students.

To achieve this we commit to:

  • informing students about their rights and responsibilities in an age-appropriate way
  • recognising the importance of friendships and peer support
  • enabling students to actively participate in creating a culture that is safe.

Empowering children and young people improves child safety. Student voice has been an important addition to the documents outlined below and the update 2023 Protect Poster, in the knowledge that policies and practices that are shaped by children’s and young people’s views can better prevent the risk of harm.

Our Year 12 Living Justly leaders, Emma and Mieka, oversaw another Community Cook-up last week at ĢƵ. On Wednesday after school, 24 student volunteers, doing their best ‘Master Chef’ impersonations, created over 50 meals for the ĢƵ community. These meals, comprising of beef and vegetable Shepherds Pies and Vegan Shepherd’s Pies, will now be frozen and distributed to families in need.

A special thanks to our Food Studies wiz Ms Ellmer, who not only set up the ingredient stations but also oversaw the talented cooks as they worked for about 90 minutes to cook and then wash and clean- up.

Thanks also to our wonderful student volunteers for all their hard work too – much appreciated!!

On the 23 and 24 March, the Year 10 and Year 11 Living Justly Leaders attended the Educating for Social Justice Seminar at the Edmund Rice Centre in Lower Plenty, Melbourne. We were one of six schools across Australia to attend the overnight seminar run by the amazing Renee Oberin from Kildare Ministries.

The seminar was an incredibly inspiring and educational experience with activities and guest speakers that encouraged us to grow our passion for social justice.

Judy Ryan came to share her experiences with how she was able to open the second injecting room in Australia after she saw the hundreds of people overdosing in her street. She encouraged us to be brave and determined when we see injustices in the world.

Thenu Herath inspired us all with her story of her upbringing and how she went from a schoolgirl with a passion to the CEO of Oaktree, a youth-run, international development organisation. Oaktree assists developing countries and people in need, with the aim to help achieve the sustainability goals and create a more just world.

Finally, we had Michael McGirr from Caritas Australia talk to us about the wonderful work that Caritas does and talk to us about the opportunities we have as young women to go into industries where we can make a difference.

As a school, we shared and got everyone involved with the Justice Tree, which was a way for all the schools to share what they’ve been doing to promote social justice and explore the things they want to achieve in the future. This also helped us develop new ideas and aspirations for ĢƵ. Some of those possibilities include holding a sleep out to raise awareness for the homelessness, organising a coat drive in the colder months, joining Oaktree’s Live Below the Line challenge to raise awareness and money for extreme poverty, and many more ideas.

The activities and learning that we achieved over the two days, left us with a lifetime of knowledge that we will carry with us through our pathways, all thanks to Michael McCallum, Bridget Taylor and the rest of the staff from ĢƵ, Kildare Ministries and the other schools that were able to make the seminar happen.
