On Tuesday 28 October, 10 ĢƵ students from our Tjatjarrang (first nations) team, joined 33 other first nations students from St Joseph’s College, Iona College, Sacred Heart College and St Ignatius College for a 2 day trip to Warrnambool and Budj Bim.

We stayed at the Warra Gnan coastal camp near the beach in Warrnambool and spent Tuesday afternoon exploring the local area. We were lucky to have Lisa Couzen’s with us from Iona who is from Warrnambool and could share first nations stories of the area with our students.

On Wednesday 29th October we headed out to Budj Bim and were able to tour the Tae Rak area with a local guide, Jaiden, who told us about the intricate system used for thousands of years to trap, smoke and store kooyang (short-finned eel).

Tae Rak is one of 3 components as part of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape and is classed as a World Heritage Site. This is the famous series of eel traps belonging to one of the oldest and most extensive aquaculture systems in the world. This land is now under the management of local Gunditjmara people so that the stories, language and culture can be preserved and passed on.

One of the students said that they enjoyed the connecting to land/country and meeting the students from other schools.

ĢƵ is proud to support our First Nations students to enhance their knowledge and connection to their heritage and culture.

Timor-Leste Immersion 2025 – A Journey to Remember

In July, a group of 8 of our Year 11 students took part in an unforgettable 12-day immersion trip to Timor-Leste. From exploring Dili’s historic sites like the Resistance Museum and Santa Cruz Cemetery, to visiting the Australian Embassy, students gained a deep understanding of the country’s troubled past but also its promising future.

The immersion included a bus trip along the coast and then south to Viqueque, where we connected with local students at ĢƵ’s sister school, Uaimori, through English conversations, games and activities, all highlighted by warm welcomes and shared laughter. We also explored Baucau, visiting the stunning St. Anthony Cathedral, and cooled off with a swim.

On our return leg of the journey, we visited the Good Crocodile Foundation, a maternity and health clinic which we supported with a donation of funds raised through our fundraising bakes sales. Back in Dili, we visited inspiring community projects like Mehi Café and the Alola Foundation and wrapped up the trip with a visit to the huge Christo Rei statue (a 27-metre-high statue of Jesus Christ facing the ocean).

This journey was more than sightseeing—it was about building friendships, learning from another culture, and growing together as global citizens.

There will be an opportunity for current Year 10 students to apply for the 2026 immersion so keep an eye on Year 10 posts and the newsletter for updates!

Our Year 10 camp at Araluen Lutheran Camp in Anglesea was definitely a trip to remember. It was just one night, from Thursday to Friday, but it felt like we packed so much into such a short time.

Upon arrival, we met the lovely camp staff and found our perfectly arranged cabins (huge thanks to Mrs Blythe who spent hours organising them so we could all be with our best friends) and dropped our bags off, before heading off on a scenic walk along the river and coastline. The views were amazing, and the fresh air and beach vibes instantly put everyone in a good mood. Later that afternoon, we got to choose between a relaxing yoga session or a pottery class with a fabulous, local artist Kirsty. Personally, I picked pottery, and learnt so many unique things from Kirsty, but also found that it was a great way to chill out and do something a bit different. Some of my friends who did the yoga class admired Emma for her calmness and serenity and walked out of their session feeling beyond peaceful and relaxed.

At the camp itself, there was heaps to do during our free time. The place had everything, including an activity room with a pool table and table tennis, trampolines, a playground, archery, beach volleyball, ovals, a basketball ring, and even a low ropes course! There was always a volleyball game in action any time we walked past the court, and the low ropes course was also a very popular activity. Both encouraged us to bond with our peers and strengthen our teamwork skills tremendously.

For lunch, we had burgers, which hit the spot after the walk. For dinner, the wonderful camp staff spoiled us with homemade fish, chips and a salad and during the meal we were lucky enough to have a trivia sheet organized by Talarah O and Georgie R. It had general knowledge questions and fun throwbacks to memories from our earlier school years. It was hilarious trying to remember certain things and seeing how competitive some people got.

That night, we had a 2000’s-themed disco, and it was so much fun. A bunch of us dressed up, and everyone got involved. We danced to the 2000’s music playlist organised by our arts leaders Georgia N and Jaz H, laughed, and just had a great time together. Afterwards, many of us watched the Geelong Cats vs Bulldogs AFL game, which was really close and intense, people definitely got into this activity!

The next day started with pancakes and toast for breakfast. We got to choose between staying at the camp for more activities or going to the beach to play games and complete more of the camp’s activities. No matter which choice people made, there was even more fun and memories made at these activities, and it was a great way to spend our last few hours before packing up.

Before heading back to school, we made one final stop at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. ĢƵ treated us all to one of their homemade ice creams (which was delicious!), and most of us couldn’t resist buying some chocolate too. It was the perfect way to end the trip.

Overall, the camp was such a good time, full of fun, laughter, and some really great memories with friends and teachers. I’m honestly so grateful we had such a wonderful opportunity.

From May 13 to 15, the Year 9 cohort took part in the exciting Beach, Bush, City (BBC) school camp. Across three days, students experienced a mix of beach, bush, and city adventures.

At the beach, we enjoyed canoeing, team-building games, and creating sand sculptures. In the bush, we soared through the trees on ziplines and tackled high ropes at Live Wire Park. The city day offered a chance to explore the wonders of marine life at SEA LIFE Aquarium and enjoy browsing the stores at Melbourne’s DFO.

Favourite moments included burying friends in the sand, observing incredible and fascinating sea creatures, and flying through the towering trees. Whether on the sand, in the treetops, or among ocean displays, every part of the camp was packed with fun and connection. BBC was a highlight of the year, three days full of laughter, adventure, and memories that will last a lifetime.

On March 3 and 4, our Year 7 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Lake Dewar Discovery Camp. Blessed with beautiful sunny weather, they embraced every opportunity to participate positively, build friendships, and create lasting memories.

From team-building activities to getting to know each other in a fun and supportive environment, the camp was a fantastic experience for all. Both ĢƵ and YMCA staff praised our students for their exceptional behaviour and positivity, making us proud of the way they represented our college. Well done, Year 7 students!

Here is some feedback from our students:

The most exciting part of the camp was the Flying Fox. I was nervous at the start but when I did it, I had fun. I really enjoyed the Jetty Jump because we were all launching into the water. (Lily B 7B)

Overall, my camp experience was so good because the activities where so fun to do. My favourite activities were the Jetty Jump and the Flying Fox. The view from the Flying Fox was so relaxing to see. The first time I went backwards with no hands and the second time I ran off the board. I rated that a 10 out of 10 as it was so fun. (Briah C 7G)

One thing that surprised me about camp was me beating Mr Pedersen and Miranda in archery because I got the yellow part of the board, and they didn’t hit the yellow part, but I did. (Willow M 7G)

Spending time at camp made me realise that I was really in high school. Camp made me make memories with different people and a different school making new memories. A memory I would cherish, is a memory when I made friends with two new girls. They had great bubbly personalities which can make people laugh really hard. (Kapawlaw H 7P)

Something I will always remember is the memories me and my friends made in our cabin. We had lots of fun talking and getting to know each other. (Isabelle C 7P)

One of the things I liked doing at camp was stargazing because I like things about planets and the galaxy. (Dawn C 7P)

Overall, my camp experience was amazing. I tried lots of new and different things and got to learn more about others. (Sienne B 7P)

A challenge I faced was Jetty Jumping. I’m not actually sure why I was afraid but when I tried a second time it was fun and wasn’t as terrifying as I thought. Something I learnt at camp was how to work as a team without being bossy. (Abigail G 7P).

One of the funniest moments happened when I was doing the Jetty jump. Everyone was told to do a pin drop only. A few people went then I was up, and it was my turn to jump. I slowly stepped up on the edge and jumped. My body was leaning forward, and everybody was saying, “Oh no!”. Then smack, I belly flopped. It was so fun. (Chelsea C 7R)

Beach Bush City Reflection

In Year 9, instead of staying at an overnight camp, we were lucky enough to receive three awesome excursions, including a trip to Melbourne CBD to explore the Sea Life aquarium and shop to our hearts content at South Wharf DFO. A scenic drive to Lorne where we were able to push our limits and face many tough challenges on a ropes course at Livewire. And a relaxing day at Anglesea, where we got to canoe up the rivers and play fantastic games on the beach. On the whole, the Beach, Bush, City camp will be one to remember, as the memories that we all made were priceless.

To kick off the first day, my class along with another Year 9 wellbeing group went to the city. Upon our arrival, we entered the aquarium and got to experience all of the wonderful creatures inside with our friends, and discover incredible things about them. Some of my highlights from the aquarium were getting to watch the aquarium’s 4D movie take on “Happy Feet”, immersing us all in a fun short film, and the crocodile that was over 5 metres long and weighing over 750 kilograms. Finally, after admiring the penguins, we left the aquarium and walked down to the DFO (Direct Factory Outlets). Here we were given $15 to buy ourselves lunch and plenty of time to roam around the shops. Here many people bought gifts for Mother’s Day (and themselves of course!), as well as friends and family. All in all, it was a great day, and left a lot of us very tired but even more excited for the next two days ahead.

On Thursday, we went to Anglesea for the day, and split into our classes for the two activities. My class started the day off with canoeing, and thanks to Ecologic, found ourselves either canoeing around the rivers (and getting into splashing wars) or up towards the main beach, of which offered very stunning views, especially in the perfect weather. After our canoeing experience, we swapped over with the other class and headed up to the main beach, where our Year 9 leaders led some fantastic games, including poison ball, capture the flag, cricket, and a sandcastle building competition (just to name a few). To end the day, we all regrouped on the bus and shared all our funny stories with each other.

Finally, Friday began with some unfortunate weather conditions, leaving us a bit worried about the outdoor excursions. But thankfully, they all went ahead and to avoid the rain, those going to Anglesea went 10 pin bowling first, and our trip to Livewire was still going ahead. The drive to Lorne was along the Great Ocean Road, of which all of us were in awe of, even despite the rain. Upon our arrival, it had seemingly stopped, and we all thought that we were going to have a dry rest of the day, but boy were we wrong about that! The crew at Livewire got us all set up and ready, and whilst doing the practise course on the ground, the rain came again. But we all pushed through and continued on anyway. Many people braved the hardest courses first, whilst others (such as myself) who were a bit afraid of heights, began on the easier courses. I found that everyone in our classes pushed themselves and conquered fears, despite the fact that we were all drenched from the rain. We were very thankful when our teachers called the bus early and took us to Anglesea to buy some hot chips to warm up a bit. We all walked away with smiles on our faces, as we had such a great day that will never be forgotten.

Overall, I would like to thank Ms Blythe and the other Year 9 leaders for such an incredible 3 days, as it wouldn’t have happened without them, and I can’t wait to hear about the future Bush, Beach, City excursions from the year levels to come.

The Year 7 camp last Monday and Tuesday at Lake Dewar Discovery Camp was a fun and memorable experience for both students and staff. The weather was absolutely beautiful. The camp provided the opportunity for staff and students to build connections, move out of comfort zones, display resilience and above all, have lots of laughs and fun.

Several of our Year 7 students shared their thoughts on the camp.

‘I loved Camp Dewar. It was so fun. I loved to spend time with my friends and try new things I haven’t tried before. The lake was beautiful and the people there were really kind and loving. The activities were just amazing! THE BEST CAMP SO FAR!’

The Year 9 Outdoor Ed have had an eventful semester that has required patience and resilience. After dangerous weather postponed their camp they had to deal with the uncertainty for changing to a new date and changing location. Eventually they got camp off the group I week 6 travelling to Mount Cole, Ararat to explore the state reserve. They experienced all types of weather and walked a massive 27km over 3 days!

To wrap up the term their last excursion was to Queenscliff where they were taken out onto Port Phillip Bay by Sea All Dolphin Tours. They were blessed with low winds and sunshine for the morning, within 10min of heading out onto the bay Dolphins were spotted, a rare and exciting sighting! Students were given the opportunity to snorkel with pods of dolphins and seals as well as participate in fun activities on the boat.

The Year 9 Introduction to Outdoor Education class visited Edwards’s Point last week to learn further about the impacts that humans can have on an environment.

With the support of the conservation group “Friends of Edwards Point” they participated in the removal of weeds and planted new trees in the reserve.

Afterwards they explored the reserve, taking in the variety of vegetation/wildlife in the small space and learnt about the significance of protecting the wetland for migratory birds such as the orange bellied parrot.
