Justice in Action (Cook up)

Student Reflection – Talarah, Year 11

On Wednesday, a group of students and staff had the special opportunity to gather together with the shared interest in pursuing justice in our community, which came in the form of chopping vegetables and mixing pots to go towards a comfortable dinnertime for the Outpost, an organisation who in the last financial year provided over 62,000 meals and drinks to those who came to them for help.

As part of the Justice in Action initiative, a group of us had the opportunity to cook meals for people in our local community who are impacted by the economic crises of our time. We prepared dishes like Kransky casserole, banana bread and cottage pie, warm and filling meals made with care.

Knowing that these meals would be going to people experiencing homelessness or hardship made the experience really heartfelt, because we knew our small impact as students was making a massive impact on families and individuals going through tough times. It’s so easy to take things like a warm meal for granted, but this initiative reminded all of us that not everyone has that same security and it’s important to dedicate our time to thinking and acting for positive social change.

We were honoured to have been a part of something bigger than us and make a positive impact on our community.

ĢƵ Cook Up

On Thursday 12 February, 28 students from Years 8 to 12 generously volunteered their time to prepare and cook meals for families within our local community. Led by our Year 12 Living Justly Leaders, Sienna and Kiera, students worked collaboratively to create more than 60 meals, including zucchini slice, sausage rolls, chicken and broccoli pasta bake, lasagna, shepherd’s pie, and even banana choc chip cake.

This afternoon was a wonderful example of Justice in Action; students living out our values through service, teamwork and compassion.

We extend our sincere thanks to staff members Ms MacKenzie, Indi and Mr Millie for their guidance and support throughout the session.

If you, or someone you know, would benefit from these meals, please contact ĢƵ Reception.

Valentine's day Bake Sale

On Thursday 19 February, Our College Community celebrated Valentine’s Day alongside Library Lovers’ Day with a lovestruck lunchtime across the College. Students enjoyed a highly supported bake sale “Cupid’s Cafe”, took part in the library’s “Blind Date with a Book,” (as part of Library Lovers’ Day) and cheered on their peers during the anticipated Open Mic performances. The celebration was a wonderful reflection of the connection, generosity and creativity within our school community, with all funds contributing to Wellsprings for Women! Our Living Justly, Aspire, and Arts leaders want to thank all of the ĢƵ Community for your support, donations, and participation in spreading the love this Valentines Day!

Festive Fun with Gingerbread Creations!
Our VCE students have truly embraced the Christmas spirit this week, rolling up their sleeves and showcasing their creativity by crafting delightful gingerbread houses. These charming creations weren’t just about icing and lollies—they were a celebration of teamwork, imagination, and festive cheer.

The students worked carefully to design and decorate their houses, adding personal touches that made each one unique. From colourful candy roofs to intricate icing details, the results were nothing short of spectacular!

Once complete, the gingerbread houses were packaged up to take home, ready to bring joy to families and friends over the holiday season. It’s wonderful to see our students sharing their talents and spreading Christmas cheer beyond the classroom.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this activity possible—it’s these moments that make the end of the year so special.

On Wednesday 12 November our Year 9 Introduction to Arabic students undertook an Arabic cooking activity. The 13 students prepared tabouleh, hummus and flat bread. These lunch and dinner dishes are common to Arabic speaking countries from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east. The hands-on session prepares students for the excursion to the Islamic Museum of Australia and the A1 Bakery Restaurant in Week 7, as well as complementing language studies by exploring culinary traditions of the Arab world.

Students worked collaboratively to prepare the dishes, each of the three groups preparing a separate dish. Once cooked, students sat together to enjoy tasting and sharing their creations.

A big شكراً to the Languages Department for organising this enriching experience, and to the Food Technology people for supporting the activity.

صحتين وهنا!!!!!

This semester, our Year 11 VCE:VM students have been learning about food insecurity and the impact it has on families in our community.

After volunteering with Feed Me Geelong & Feed Me Bellarine, our students were inspired to take action – planning and completing a Cook Up to prepare a variety of nutritious meals for local families experiencing food insecurity.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Feed Me Bellarine for welcoming our students, sharing insights about your incredible organisation, and for the ongoing work you do to support families across our region.

Together, we’re learning, growing and helping to make a positive difference.

We have had a busy week in Food Studies last week starting off with an early start for the year 11 team to travel to Melbourne to volunteer for the morning at FareShare in Abbotsford. We have received a lovely follow up letter from the team at FareShare and I am sharing it with the College.

Thank you for bringing the ĢƵ studentsinto the Schools Kitchen on Monday 20 October. We appreciate your time and support in providing much needed nourishment and peace of mind for less fortunate people in our community.

While you were here, you:

Trayed schnitzel for 220 meals

Decanted 75kg Hungry Jacks sauce

Trayed 380kg tomatoes for roasting

Trayed chicken for 244 meals & turkey for 200 meals

Open and trayed rice for 700 meals

Chopped 70kg bacon (for 800 meals)

Trayed-up pasta for approximately 750 meals

Prepared 12kg mushrooms

Sorted crates

Cleaned and reset the kitchen

I would also like to add my thanks to the families for supporting the early morning drop off at school and for other families hosting a school friend the night before so they could get to the early start. Thanks to the students for their respect, engagement and support in the commercial kitchen and to Mr Groz for helping with the whole day.

It was a terrific morning and such a wonderful opportunity to support this organisation. Food Insecurity & Food Waste is a growing concern in our community and part of our key knowledge studies in VCE Food.

For a treat while we were “up in the big smoke” we took the students for lunch at A1 Lebanese Bakery in Sydney Road Brunswick. Also part of Year 11 Food Studies is to learn (and experience!) how migration has influenced Australian food.

Then we had the same year 11 group complete their last SAC where they had to:

Design and develop a practical food solution in response to an opportunity or a need in a domestic or small-scale setting. This included being able adaptrecipes to suit individual’s dietary requirements (food intolerances and allergies)and explorethe opportunity and pathways for the transition of practical food skills from domestic to entrepreneurial or commercial settings. Some of the terrific prototypes prepared included GF meal kits for Overnight Night Oats, Meat or Vegetarian GF, LF Microwave Baked Potatoe Meal Kits, LF Chicken Katsu, Pizzas with GF, DF and Vegetarian options and a Burrito Wrap that can be adapted to GF, DF and Vegetarian also.

On Friday the Year 10 class were treated to a MasterClass from 2 of our visiting japanese exchange students – Hana and Aya. They conducted the demonstration for the students at the start and then guided them throught the practical lesson to all produce an authentic and delicious Bento Box.

And yesterday – our first year 8 class for Semester 2 produced their own design for healthy pizzas as part of their assessment task 2. They were able to show all the skills they have been developing over the semester in the prac room and independently and confidently make their own pizzas. Their fabulous results are shown below. We really hope our families can encourge the students to keep using these “skills for life”at home and can also enjoy some delicious pizzas and other family friendly foods being made for them at home!

The Year 11 ĢƵ students enjoyed an educational excursion to Adelia Fine Foods in Geelong. Adelia Fine Foods is a local small business specialising in wholesome and delicious food including ranges of Brownies and Granola. During the visit, we were given a guided tour of the facility, where we got to see behind the scenes and learn how their products are lovingly made. We also explored all the different products they offer, gaining insight into the process of creating high-quality, local gourmet foods. It was a great opportunity to see out recent small business topics in action.

We thank Amelia (ĢƵ Alumni) for giving us her time, sharing her expertise and providing some delicious samples.

Hello Everyone,

Today in Brigid’s Garden Program we harvested some beautiful vegetables for the very last time. The program has been running at ĢƵ for 10 years and this is our final week. It’s important to celebrate all the amazing achievements and wins both big and small that we have experienced over that time.

We have had a wonderful diverse group of students who have been part of the program over the years. Brigid’s Garden Program created space for the students to learn about the cycles of life in the garden and nature, and taking food straight from the garden to recipes we cooked in the kitchen, sometimes sharing our abundance within the wider school environment.

Development in confidence, resilience and strong friendships were created within the group which are part of the program’s legacy, with some of the students who have since graduated still meeting up regularly as the ‘garden girls’.

So much gratitude to the many LSO staff past and present who have supported and assisted with the program over the years – Tracey Rose, Deb Hartrup, Robbie Maloney, Karen Kershaw, India Mintram-Porter, Jen Collins, Georgie Powell and the last few years Chris Smith.

The school environment is representative of a village and there were so many who have helped along the way – the leadership team – Luci, Helen, Jo, the maintenance team, Chris, David and Vince, Sam, and the office team – Lesley, Teresa, Yolanda, Jacqui, Mel, the library team past and present – Jo, Vicki, Sue, Brendan, EVERYONE on the LSO Team – with special mention to Julie, and Learning Diversity Leadership – Therese, Di, Anne, Linda. I’m sure there are many others who deserve a mention – to everyone – to ALL the staff who showed your support over the years – a big thank you!

With gratitude,

Lisa Singline
Learning Support Officer

VCE Food Studies Excursion last Thursday in Melbourne. We visited the Queen Victoria Market and then Ratio Cocoa Roasters. The Year 12 students were investigating food issues for their Unit 4 Written Report SAC. We were looking for examples of sustainability, ethics, food citizenship and food sovereignty at the market as part of our local food system.

We then took a quick tram trip up Sydney Road to the fabulous local chocolate maker Deb Makin @ Ratio Cocoa. We had a tour of the chocolate factory and then a tasting of the different aspects of this process.

We really had a terrific day and thank the students for their excellent engagement. We hope they have been inspired and enriched by this learning experience.
