Arriving back from CPR training this afternoon ourÌýGeneralÌýOffice space had been transformed into a Christmas wonderland.Ìý For some,Ìý1ÌýDecember marks the beginning of their favourite time of the year, for others it strikes fear that the end of the year is looming and the ‘to do’ list feels like it is only getting longer. For those of the Christian tradition this Sunday marks the beginning of Advent.ÌýÌý

In our busy world Advent calls us to a counter cultural response. It offers an invitation to slow down and embrace the waiting, to embrace holy stillness. Just like we tidy our houses to make space for family andÌýfriends who may be visiting during the holiday season, we are also challenged to consider what needs to be tidied up in our hearts to make space for the gift of the divine presence to enter our lives.ÌýÌý

This newsletter’s edition of ‘Illumine’ speaks about the hope that can enter our hearts during the time of Advent when we stop and notice the good around us. In the Brigidine tradition the sisters would say to celebrate all that is good with joy and gratitude. Click the image below to read ‘Illumine’.

There was lots of ‘good’ to notice in the pastÌýfortnight.Ìý

Firstly,Ìýas we gathered for our Celebration of Achievement on Tuesday evening,Ìýwe celebrated achievement, perseverance and the spirit that defines our College community. Awards nights are more than a recognition of excellence; they are a testament to the values that shape us and the vision that propels us forward.  This year, our College theme ‘Hospitality: Open Encounter Transform’ has invited us to live with openness and generosity. Hospitality is more than a welcome; it is an attitude of heart. It is the willingness to encounter others deeply, to listen, to learn and to be changed by those encounters. Transformation happens when we open ourselves to new perspectives and allow those experiences to shape who we are becoming. This was reflected in the achievements of our students, openness to learning, openness to relationships with others, openness to possibilities and opportunities to grow and contribute. Our students thrive because of the bonds between students, families, staff and the wider community. These connections are not accidental; they are cultivated with care and purpose. We especially thank members of our Stewardship Council and our special guests who sponsored awards this year, for their ongoing commitment to our College. Here are some photos from the night.

It was a delight to welcome backÌýMariaÌýDeronjic,Ìýto our awards night. Maria isÌýa proud Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ graduate from the Class of 2018. During her time at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, Maria developed a deep passion for science, particularly Chemistry and Biology, which set the foundation for her future career.ÌýMaria is currently studying aÌýMaster of Philosophy at Deakin University, Burwood. Her research focuses on breast cancer, investigating how manipulating metabolism could slow disease progression. She is about toÌýcommenceÌýa new role in February as a Clinical Trial Study Coordinator intern with the VCCC Alliance at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Her long-term goal is to complete a PhD and continue contributing to groundbreaking research. Maria’s passion and commitment to providing hope to women who suffer from breast cancer was an inspiration to all.Ìý

As we closed out the 2025 academic year,Ìýyesterday I attended the year level gratitude liturgies in St Brigid’s chapel.ÌýThese were an opportunity for studentsÌýto gather with their Wellbeing teachers, reflect and offer thanks for all that has been. I was touched by their sincerity and authenticity when speaking to each of their wellbeing teacher and year level leaders. These liturgies rounded out a busyÌýweek with a focus on Years 9ÌýtoÌý11 engaging in formal exams in VCE exam style settings. This process provides assessment feedback for students and staff and the opportunity to gain experience in understandingÌýVCEÌýexamÌýarrangementsÌýpreparing our students for future success.Ìý

As our students begin early commencement classes nextÌýweek,Ìýwe recognise that this will coincide with some of the social media platforms beginning to implement theÌýclosureÌýof accounts for under 16’s.ÌýWe continue to encourage families to access the information that has been provided with furtherÌýarticles in this newsletter. We will be speaking with ourÌýjuniorÌýyear levels during wellbeing time next week to support them with this change. Click the link to read more.

The final celebration to reflect on was our gathering with our Year 12 graduates and their families last Friday evening. It was a wonderful opportunity to chat with families, reminisce, affirm the growth and efforts of the Class of 2025 and share future plans. There was a true spirit of celebration in the air. Thanks to the staff who organised all the finer details to ensure the evening was a success. Here are some photos from the night.

I would like to extend an invitation to families to attend our end of year mass to be held on MondayÌý8ÌýDecember at 9.10am in Tullow Hall. At this mass we will also farewell staff who are leaving us this year including Mrs Linda Kiernan who retires after 40 years at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. This is an incredible contribution to the life of the College. Linda shares thatÌýit’sÌýtime to retire before she starts to teach the grandchildren of past students!Ìý

There will be one more newsletter before the end of the year with final farewells and acknowledgements.Ìý

Stories, gratitude, memories, pride, celebration, achievement,ÌýendingsÌýand beginnings…. all remind us of John 10:10 ‘I have come that you may have life and have it in abundance.’ÌýÌý

ThisÌýAdvent may you find abundance in your heart space, in your time with family, in the still moments when you feel the breeze, hear the magpie songÌýorÌýhave theÌýwarmth of theÌýsummerÌýsun touch your cheek. May your abundance beÌýinÌýnoticing theÌýtraces of the divine.ÌýÌý

BlessingsÌý

This week we gathered to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our 2022 high achievers. This included students who received ATARS in the 90s, students who achieved the highest study score in individual subjects and the highest achievers in the VCAL pathway. We also announced the College Dux.

We listened to speeches from Nyah A our VCAL High Achiever and Violet H College Dux for 2022

VCE Leader Lisa Bolitho shared the following words:

We are all here to celebrate doing ordinary things, extraordinarily well, in a manner befitting Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ’s Brigidine values of strength and kindliness.

The 2022 VCE high achievers here today have achieved ATARs that place them in the top 9% of the state and/or achieved the top study scores of a particular subject at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

They will have you believe that their efforts were nothing out of the ordinary, tell you that they ‘had fun’ and balanced school work with paid employment, community or leadership work, sport and socialising. They won’t be wrong, but what these high achievers perhaps don’t realise, is that what they have accomplished, and what enabled this type of balance, was their exceptional use of the resources before them. As teachers, we learn a lot from the students in our classrooms. These students were models of how to:

  • Use every minute of your time productively – including time for rest.
  • Plan ahead
  • Predict obstacles or challenges and actively seek out solutions.
  • Take responsibility for your own learning and achievement.
  • Actively nurture relationships with classmates and teachers.
  • Never think near enough was good enough.
  • Model humility, hard work and persistence, shouldering maturity and persistence that impressed us all.
  • Maintain a sense of humour and know when to have a bit of fun!
  • Ordinary things? Yes. But done extraordinarily well.

The students on the stage today did not strive to be THE best; they strove to be THEIR best.

Year 12 – Applications for University, TAFE and other Higher Education Providers

The VTAC online application for our Year 12 students applying for further study at TAFE, University or other Independent Tertiary Providers opened on the 3rd August 2020. Timely applications close 30th of September 2020. Year 12 students will be required to pay a fee of $41.00 to VTAC for a ‘timely application’ to be processed.

Applicants must submit at least one preference and pay the fee to activate the VTAC process. ÌýStudents can choose up to 8 preferences; however, they do not have to use all 8 in the application. Students should always list their preferences in the order of what they most want to study and where they most want to go and include only courses they would consider accepting. It is important that the preference list has pathway plans and includes a course considered a ‘sure thing’.

When students are reviewing their preferences, it is vital that they read the essential requirements and admission criteria for selection. Some courses require students to submit additional information early. The closing dates for some courses requiring additional information is as early as September! Essential requirements and admission criteria are listed in the course search details.

As part of the VTAC application process, students can apply for extra consideration through SEAS, Special Entry Access Scheme. There are four categories under which SEAS is granted, personal information and location, disadvantaged financial background, disability or medical condition and difficult circumstances. Three of these categories require additional information from the applicant. This should be actioned as early as possible. Further information regarding SEAS and other information pertaining to VTAC can be found on the VTAC website, .ÌýAll students are encouraged to apply for Category ONE, personal information and location and Category FOUR, difficult circumstances.

Students have been briefed on the VTAC process.

Here are more information and viewing options:

A explaining the VTAC application process is now available to view on demand.

Students and parents can also book into a to see VTAC information and have the opportunity to ask questions throughout. See the .

Changes to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in 2020

The Victorian Government has announced that, on advice from the Chief Health Officer, all Victorian government schools will move to remote and flexible learning and teaching for Term 2.

The Victorian Government has also announced the following adjustments to the delivery of the VCE:

• The GAT test will move from June to October or November.

• End-of-year exams will be postponed until at least December.

• School-based assessment tasks will be reduced where possible to relieve some pressure on students as they move to remote and flexible learning arrangements.

• Universities will be asked to delay the start of the 2021 university year to account for the impacts of coronavirus on senior secondary students.

The VCAA has been asked to consider a compressed end-of-year exam schedule in recognition of the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Changes to Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in 2020

There will be no change to VCAL content or assessment, and this will continue in a remote and flexible learning and teaching format for Term 2. If your daughter is enrolled in a VET unit with a mandatory work placement, they will need to defer their mandatory work placement until it can be conducted. This may affect the timing of the award of the student’s certificate. VCAL students will have more time to complete their courses and this will be consistent with the revised dates for the VCE. If students are completing an SBAT, Mrs Wilson will need to be informed and if the placement is still possible, and parental permission given the placement is to continue.

In the meantime, a student’s primary goal during this time is to focus on learning, stay in contact with their teachers and keep on track. Turn to their teachers and family for guidance and support, and the school will provide you with more information as it becomes available.
