On Wednesday 26 February the people completing VCE English in Year 11 had the privilege of watching a play adaption of the play we are studying – Medea.

Medea is a Greek tragedy that involves the power and role of women, so it was very fitting for us to study. The play was intriguing, enticing, and entertaining, and it really made a difference watching a live performance instead of studying and reading words only.

At the end of the performance, the cast members answered questions, which furthered our thinking and got us prepared for the upcoming SAC. This was an amazing experience for our year level to be involved in.

Year 11 Modern History excursion to The Jewish Holocaust Museum

On Tuesday 25 June, the Year 11 VCE Modern History class went to the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick. We participated in a workshop where we talked about how Jewish people lived in Nazi Germany and their lives before, during and after the Holocaust. We handled artifacts from the period which we analysed to gain a greater understanding and insight into areas such as use of propaganda, deception and acts of courage. We also had the privilege to listen to the story of a holocaust survivor, Joe Szwarcberg. Joe’s message to the world is, “to be kind always.” Students came away with a new understanding of the period.

Student reflections:

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, I found it very educational and special to be able to talk to Joe, who experienced the Holocaust firsthand as a young boy, learning about his connection with his family was also very wholesome and moving. Despite having prior knowledge on the Holocaust, I felt this experience provided a new perspective, clarity and a deeper understanding regarding the gruesome reality of the Holocaust and all the inner details surrounding it. – Isla

I really enjoyed all aspects of the museum especially hearing from Joe Szwarcberg, having an experience that was personal and interactive for us. Overall having a survivor speak to us was amazing and interesting as we could ask questions. – Ava

Both touring the museum and listening to holocaust survivor Jo Szwarcberg was a great experience. Having a guided tour was also incredibly informative as she went into detail on specific moments; supported through the artifacts we were looking at. – Elissa

I really enjoyed the touring of the museum, having a descendant survivor of the Holocaust communicate about their parents past and the strife they endured really contributed to the enlightening atmosphere of the environment. This was furthered by the abundant amount of knowledge she had to give to both the students and teachers. – Ella

I really enjoyed visiting the museum and I thought it was a great opportunity to hear from Joe Szwarcberg, a survivor of the Holocaust who had very important lessons and amazing insight to share with us. – Phoebe

Last week, Year 9 Legal and Political Systems students embarked on an historical exploration of Victoria’s legal system with a visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol, Old Watch House, and Old Magistrates’ Court. Students deepened their knowledge of crime and sentencing through seeing the harsh realities of life behind bars and listening to the stories of notorious inmate experiences and attempted escapes.

Visiting the Watch House provided students with the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of both prisoners and police officers. Students underwent the process of admission, from fingerprinting to mugshots, experiencing firsthand the procedures of law enforcement in colonial Melbourne.

Finally, students participated in a court room role play, taking on key parts in the legal process. Students consolidated their understanding of court procedures, sentencing and how the court system applies laws to determine how justice might be achieved for victims and perpetrators.

Can you help solve the mystery?

In the ĢƵ Archives collection there is a well-made, double sided, collage of pictures, documents and handmade samples of uniform worn by ĢƵ students. It tells the story of ĢƵ House and the changes to ĢƵ over the years. It was made on a pinboard, covered in crepe paper in the school colors. It was put together in the late 1990s, most likely by a year 9 student. Unfortunately, we have no record of who put this unique historical piece together, and we would love to know who created it.

If you have any information about this amazing collage, please contact the ĢƵ Archivists via email: community@clonard.vic.edu.au

The Year 10 PreCAL group in its entirety showed courage, faith and wonder in the time they took to prepare for this Assembly.  They stood in front of the whole school  and led the remembrance of our Australian fallen soldiers to remind all students of the importance of the men and women who have given their lives for us.

They created the PowerPoint first creating a version with text and then with just pictures.  They helped each other to make the 1000 material poppies for students to plant around the flame at ĢƵ house after the assembly.  They cut and attached hairpins to 1000 rosemary sprigs to give out to the girls to wear for the day and to remember the fallen soldiers.  They embraced the challenge of presenting to the school took part either reading on stage or handing out  and standing in the hall.

Sienna Watson and Maddy Weir both first nations students read the Acknowledgement to country and the prayer, Anika Ginn read a reflection, Paige O’Neill ( Year 12 VCAL) read an introduction, Zoe Richards read a letter from a soldier and Catie Serra read the final Ode before the last post.  They wore their best uniforms and blazers, were respectful and brought a sense of dignity gravity and understanding to the rituals that the whole school appreciated. Isabella Mc Donald, Anika Ginn  and Ella Ryan carried the student wreaths to the flame. We were all extremely proud of them.

We were also proud to have Shane Telford, Sacha Saker and Ailish Tyrell to represent the services and Jarrah Cuttriss in her cadets uniform in attendance to accompany the wreaths to the flag raising.  Thanks to all of these staff and students who went out of their way to bring their medals and contribute to the ceremonies.

Thanks also to the rest of the class who stood with patience and gravitas with their baskets to hand out the poppies and rosemary after the Rouse: Millie Bayliss, Georgia Celi, Savannah Garia-Aria, Emily Hase, Chloe Payne, Sarah Schultz, Meg Small, Olivia Wilson and Holly Winkler. We have a great team of staff in VCAL and PreCAL who helped and supported this event for months as we researched and planned in numeracy, Literacy and Industry and Enterprise; alongside the integration aides, Evonne and Bonnie who assisted the girls.   It was a fitting way to mark the moment for all of the girls at ĢƵ.

On Tuesday 16 March, our Unit 3/4 Australian History class attended an excursion back in time to  the Eureka Museum and Sovereign Hill Ballarat.

The girls learned about pressures for change to the limited political rights which existed on the goldfields, the agitation for change which led to the Eureka Rebellion and the huge array of changes which evolved in Victoria during and after the gold rush.

They completed some research at the Eureka Museum and then gained insights into the lives of diggers, European and Chinese, at Sovereign Hill. They then stood on Bakery Hill, where the Eureka flag was first raised, before visiting a family restaurant for lunch and a quick return home.

The ĢƵ library is creating a book about the school’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will be a valuable resource for our school, not only recording our experiences but also creating a primary resource to be used by historians and students in the future. We will also submit a copy of the book to the State Library of Victoria, making it a part of the SLV’s vast historical collection.

To do this, we need your input. Your voices matter. We want you to describe your thoughts and feelings about the past few weeks. Tell us about your experience of spending the Easter holidays at home. Did you enjoy spending lots of time at home or do you miss getting out and about? What was new?

We also want to hear about your initial experience of doing lessons at home. Describe your thoughts and feelings about remote learning over the past week. You could address questions such as: Do you like doing lessons at home? What do you miss most about school? What have been the best bits about staying home for school, and what are the things you have found hardest?

You can submit your response in writing (a paragraph or more if you want to), or you might like to create some art. Send us photos of your artwork and anything else you would like added to the book: your desk, planning for learning at home, etc.

Submit your contributions and queries to Ms Ryan: library@clonard.vic.edu.au

We’re looking forward to hearing from as many of you as possible.
