Library Lovers’ Day is traditionally held on Valentine’s Day each year, but this year it was celebrated on Thursday February 19 at ĢƵ.

Leading up to the day, there were a number of colourful displays in the library featuring books and hearts as well as messages from students and staff about why they love libraries.

On Library Lovers’ Day, an open Mic was held out the front of ĢƵ House alongside a Bake sale and Blind Date with a Book. A large crowd of students and staff enjoyed songs by junior and senior students and students were able to borrow a library book wrapped in brown paper so that they received a surprise when they unwrapped the book. The lunch time celebration was organised by student leaders who did a fantastic job coordinating the different elements of the day and ensured that the ĢƵ library would always be a library to be celebrated.

“It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do”.

Sense and Sensibility, 1811, Jane Austen

ĢƵ recently celebrated the life of one of literature’s most esteemed authors, Jane Austen. 2025 marks the 250th year anniversary of Jane’s birth and her amazing legacy. An aspiring writer, Jane faced many obstacles in the Regency period of England when a woman’s aspirations were limited by her financial eligibility in marriage and societal connections. Many of Jane’s novels reflect her witty commentary on the society in which she mingled. In the Brigidine Centre we enjoyed acknowledging and celebrating the life and legacy of Jane. From high tea displays to regency poems and the screening of Pride and Prejudice at lunchtime, we hope the students who passed by these displays, enjoyed the opportunity to ponder and perhaps take up the opportunity to read one of her six most well regarded and timeless masterpieces of English Literature.

Book an Adventure was the 2025 Book Week theme and this year ĢƵ students really did go on inspiring adventures throughout Book Week. There were a number of activities held in the library which included teachers reading to students, performing poems as well as discussing their love of books such as Frankestein and Great Expectations. There was a treasure hunt for book-related clues around the college grounds and a Shadow Judging activity related to short-listed books for the CBCA awards. Each day of Book Week library staff dressed in a different book character costume which helped to promote costume day which was held on Thursday August 21. A wonderful array of book character costumes were worn by students on the day with a large number of staff also donning colourful costumes to help promote the joy of reading amongst the students. The annual costume book parade around the college grounds was followed by an open mic of students and staff singing favourite songs in the glorious late winter sunshine. Thank you to all students and staff who dressed up on costume day and thank you to the tireless work of the library staff in promoting and managing this key event in the college calendar.

In 2025, Year 7 students have been reading and studying the novel, Crow Country, by Kate Constable. Students were fortunate to have Kate Constable speak to them about the novel in the Kildare Theatre on Tuesday August 5.

Prior to speaking about her writing of the novel, Kate gave the students an overview of how she came to be a writer, her earlier writing successes, including how she and her husband were married after she wrote an early novel which had a character in it that was based on himself.

Kate spoke at length about the background to writing Crow Country, which is set in Boort, Victoria, and how she wrote a novel with a First Nation’s story by a non-Indigenous author. She talked about the research she did into the service First Nation’s soldiers gave to the Australian army during World War two and how they were often treated after the war. This research enabled Kate to create and explore key characters in her novel. Crow Country has been a popular novel studied in schools for a number of years and after the presentation, there was a line of over sixty students queuing up to have their novels signed by Kate.

This was an invaluable presentation that would enhance the students’ appreciation and understanding of the novel.

On Friday July 25, Year 7 students were fortunate to have a presentation by acclaimed Australian middle grade fiction author Katrina Nannestad. Katrina is the author of several novels exploring the lives of European children during World War two. Her novels such as We Are Wolves and Waiting for the Storks are based on programs that Nazi Germany had running during World War two. We are Wolves is a novel exploring the Wolfskinder children who lived in the forests of Germany after their homes were bombed and families were separated. Waiting for the Storks explores the effects of the Lebensborn program- Hitler’s program to breed white Aryan German children. Katrina spoke in detail about her research process, planning her novels, the daily writing process and the importance of creating memorable characters to generate empathy in the reader. Students asked questions throughout the presentation and a number of students lined up after the presentation to have their books signed. Katrina Nannestad was brought to ĢƵ as part of the Brigidine Centre library’s program of engaging students with Australian authors.

A workshop on creating zines was held in the library on Friday May 2. Zines are small magazines, self-published on any topic and which often include words, collage, drawing and images. The library has a collection of zines which students are able to read. A zine is made without stables and is folded in a unique pattern to create eight or more pages. They can be about any topic and zines became popular in the 1960s as a form of artistic and literary expression. The workshop was conducted by artist and art teacher Tegan Crosbie who guided the students on their artistic endeavours and who supplied many materials for students to choose from to create their zines. It was a wonderful, reflective and friendly workshop where students were able to utilise their creative and design skills to make a truly unique zine.

Each year the ĢƵ library celebrates World Poetry Day on March 21. It is a UNESCO celebration and promotion of poetry which has been occurring since 1999.

This year the library ran a poetry writing competition where students were invited to write a poem of 14 lines or more on a topic of their choice. Year 8 student, Po L, was the winner of the competition with Chelsea P receiving an encouragement award.

Apart from promoting poetry books in the library with colourful displays, the library also ran a Blind Date with a poetry book competition, where students could borrow a poetry book that was sealed in a brown paper bag, and they could only discover their surprise once the paper bag was opened. This activity proved to be a hit with students.

In conjunction with the library, Aspire Leaders organised an Open Mic poetry reading in front of ĢƵ House on Friday March 21. Staff and students read poems, some of their own, to students enjoying the sunshine along with many interested families who were part of the Open Day tours which were occurring at the time.

Overall, it was a great day to take in some poetry at ĢƵ.

On Tuesday October 29, 16 Year 7 students and three Year 8 students attended an excursion to the Geelong library for a tour of each level of The Dome.

The impetus for the tour came out of student requests in the fortnightly Library Book Club meetings for a tour to visit the library.

On the tour, students learnt about 3D printing capabilities at the library and were then taken on a tour of each level to familiarise themselves with the different library collections as well as the workings of the central Geelong library. Students loved the view from the fifth floor balcony over Geelong city towards the Bay, as well as the red History Research level where they were able to browse the facilities and learn about researching their family histories.

Students were also taken to the first floor of the library to familiarise themselves with the YA collection at the library as well as having the opportunity to play puzzles, Just Dance and gaming. This was a valuable experience for the students to familiarise themselves with the Geelong library service and also to extend their love and reach of books.

The Tiny Desk Concerts at the Brigidine Centre were a wonderful initiative by the Arts Leaders, together with the Music Department. Each week, rehearsals for various groups take place in the music room, but we decided to bring these performances into a public space. Mr. Ryan kindly hosted these events in the library.

A big thank you to the String Ensemble and Ms. Udarbe, the Rockband with Mr. Corless, the ĢƵ Concert Band with Mr. Cox, and the ĢƵ Choir withMs. Boveand Ms. Howard. Your performances were exceptional and truly highlighted the talent within our community.

Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the musicians, music teachers, Mr. Ryan, Ms. F, Darren, and the Arts Leaders for their dedication and support in making these concerts a success.
