In 2025, Year 7 students have been reading and studying the novel, Crow Country, by Kate Constable. Students were fortunate to have Kate Constable speak to them about the novel in the Kildare Theatre on Tuesday August 5.

Prior to speaking about her writing of the novel, Kate gave the students an overview of how she came to be a writer, her earlier writing successes, including how she and her husband were married after she wrote an early novel which had a character in it that was based on himself.

Kate spoke at length about the background to writing Crow Country, which is set in Boort, Victoria, and how she wrote a novel with a First Nation’s story by a non-Indigenous author. She talked about the research she did into the service First Nation’s soldiers gave to the Australian army during World War two and how they were often treated after the war. This research enabled Kate to create and explore key characters in her novel. Crow Country has been a popular novel studied in schools for a number of years and after the presentation, there was a line of over sixty students queuing up to have their novels signed by Kate.

This was an invaluable presentation that would enhance the students’ appreciation and understanding of the novel.

On Friday July 25, Year 7 students were fortunate to have a presentation by acclaimed Australian middle grade fiction author Katrina Nannestad. Katrina is the author of several novels exploring the lives of European children during World War two. Her novels such as We Are Wolves and Waiting for the Storks are based on programs that Nazi Germany had running during World War two. We are Wolves is a novel exploring the Wolfskinder children who lived in the forests of Germany after their homes were bombed and families were separated. Waiting for the Storks explores the effects of the Lebensborn program- Hitler’s program to breed white Aryan German children. Katrina spoke in detail about her research process, planning her novels, the daily writing process and the importance of creating memorable characters to generate empathy in the reader. Students asked questions throughout the presentation and a number of students lined up after the presentation to have their books signed. Katrina Nannestad was brought to ĢƵ as part of the Brigidine Centre library’s program of engaging students with Australian authors.

The Year 12 VCE VM Literacy class recently hosted guest speaker Senior Constable Dee Kuchenmeister from the Victoria Police Proactive Policing Community Engagement Unit.

Dee was a wealth of interesting relevant and helpful information to students on topics including: personal safety in the community – including when driving, on public transport, exercising and when out at night with friends. Also discussed was career opportunities and pathways in the Victorian Police force, as well as workplace safety – tips for responding to aggressive customers and how to recognise bullying and harassment including online examples and strategies to respond.

We are very grateful that Dee gave her time to spend the morning with the class.

Whole School Literacy Strategy: Building a Strong Foundation for Student Success

An update on our ĢƵ literacy journey:

As a member of the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools Secondary Disciplinary Literacy Project, in 2023, the Learning Team developed our Visionary Literacy Statement:

In our ĢƵ community of learners, all students will be taught explicit strategies to decode new language. Students will engage in programs that enrich their reading capacity and acquisition of skills and knowledge in their subject. We want students to acquire reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that enable them to succeed and flourish in their learning and society.”

Accompanying the vision was the development of a Whole School Literacy Strategy to ensure that every teacher across all subjects from Years 7 to 12 plays a role in achieving this. It includes a variety of elements.

Subject teachers are well-versed in the specific language of their disciplines. Key vocabulary and authentic, complex texts are integrated into all units of study, with explicit vocabulary instruction and classroom displays to reinforce learning. An authentic text is one that models how to write effectively in a particular discipline; it could be a practical report for Science or a source analysis for History. In Maths it is often a worded problem. Ensuring students can read these and then learn to write in the same way is key for literacy development.

Teachers use a Literacy Pedagogical Framework of tell, show, explain, imitate, innovate and distribute to engage students with these authentic texts. Key vocabulary is taught before assessments and students are taught the meaning of new words in a subject through understanding the etymology (origins) and parts of words (morphological knowledge) so as to have agency over building their own vocabulary. We are beginning the process of auditing units in 2024 to build in time for reading and writing instruction, all of which are supported with professional learning.

Unlike traditional general literacy approaches, our literacy framework works through subject disciplines, where the focus is clear on what success in reading and writing looks like in each subject and scaffolds how to achieve this. It has student empowerment at its centre.

Regular data collection from a variety of sources helps us assess impact and informs teaching strategies. To foster a reading culture, learning areas collaborate with the library to incorporate a variety of texts, and the college hosts activities throughout the year to celebrate and promote reading.

Embedding this comprehensive strategy involves regular reviews of our progress through student and teacher voice, subject teams, the Learning Team and the Extended Leadership Team.
