On our recent growth/study day our Year 7/ 8 Encounters teachers and Year 9 English Maths and Science teachers collaborated on designing learning units for competence as a part of the University of Melbourne New Metrics program.

Teachers and Learning Support Officers worked together to further develop their understanding of the competencies and elements; with a particular focus on the Personal Development and Acting Ethically competencies earlier in the day. After exploring their definitions, attributes and how they align with learning and life, the focus shifted to embedding these in learning programs and assessment. This means we are recognising a much broader range of who our students are and what they can do in their learning and assessment. These competencies that students develop are transferable across subjects, areas of school and life outside of school. Strength in these competencies will support our students to thrive at school and in the future beyond Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

As part of the Year 9 Pathways Program, teachers are maintaining our focus on competencies as part of the learning design in Science, English and Mathematics.Ìý The same competency is taught in each learning area and these teachers will be responsible for assessing student progress in the competencies of Agency and Quality Thinking. ÌýAs you can see from the snippets below, the competencies are made part of how we approach the learning of the content and skills of these subjects.Ìý Thus, the competencies enhance student learning and gives us all a shared language around what great learning looks like.

Students in Year 9 have been working with the language of competencies since Year 7 and are well aware of how they operate within their subjects.Ìý At the end of this semester, you will receive another report from the University of Melbourne in the fan reports on Agency in Learning, Quality Thinking and Active Citizenship.Ìý In Semester 2, the focus will be on Agency as the foundational competency and Communication and Acting Ethically.Ìý The Science, Maths and English teachers are the New Metrics raters for Year 9.Ìý All other subjects teach, assess and report on the General Capabilities in the Victorian Curriculum (2.0)

At Year 9, with students starting to think about their first jobs, the fans can be very useful in bolstering your young person’s application.Ìý When they apply for their firstÌýposition, they often have little in the way of specifics they can articulate but with the University of Melbourne New Metrics Competency report, they can demonstrate categorically, that they are able to take initiative, communicate, act ethically and work collaboratively – whatever their strengths are that apply to the position they seek.Ìý This could bring your young person’s application to the attention of a potential employer because it is an objective measure of what they can do.Ìý

In addition, students who demonstrate strong capability in Student Agency through their solid work in the Study Lessons and in their studies in English, Science and Maths, can apply for a Study Passport in Term 2.Ìý A Study Passport allows a student with high agency to study independently anywhere in the school instead of remaining in the Study Hub.Ìý They attend the Study Hub and have their names marked off and indicate to the teacher where they are going to study in that lesson and off they go! ÌýMoreover, as we introduce Augmented Learning through Term 2 for Term 3, students will need to demonstrate that they can indeed be responsible for their own learning, if they want to apply for an online course.Ìý This is because they will undertake the course on their own (with support from a teacher who touches base) from universities across the world to personalise their Year 9 experience.Ìý More information on that will follow.

So, as you can see, developing students’ competencies start to make a significant difference in school and out in the world.Ìý

On Thursday May 16 the Year 12 VM and VPC class travelled into Melbourne to visit Monopoly Dreams as part of their unit of work in Numeracy.Ìý

Monopoly Dreams is a multi-sensory experience that featured augmented reality, 4D technology and provided the opportunity for our students to literally step onto the streets of a Monopoly City and complete numerous games and challenges.

Students have been exploring board games to understand the Maths Problem Solving Cycle.Ìý They have had the opportunity to play some games in class and have been evaluating and completing a positive -negative analysis based on their experiences in the game.

Students have returned to school ready to start creating their own board games.Ìý It was a great day for all involved and we are looking forward to seeing their creations.

Our Learning Leaders across all subjects continue to do important work this term with students to develop their literacy skills; the ability to read and understand texts and therefore access learning. Increasingly Maths requires students to understand language in order to work out what the problem is asking of them. George McMeel our Mathematics Learning Leader has led a focus for his team on teaching students how to understand the vocabulary in worded problems. George has used the international assessment test P.I.S.A. samples as well as creating original problems that offer contexts students may or may not be familiar with.

Below are some thoughts from Dan Madden’s year 9 Advanced Maths students who were working hard on unpacking worded problems this week. When asked, ‘What is the relationship between words and numbers in Maths?’ They offered:

‘Worded problems are from real life.’ – Tayla

‘The questions that are asked are always worded and helps relate to the real world.’ – Melissa

‘Words help you find the equation.’ – Lyla

‘Words describe what’s happening.’ – Simona

Dan and our other Math’s teachers are providing students with ways to cope with the uncertainty of new language in Math’s, to build their confidence and ability to persist when encountering it. Whilst the current unit is trigonometry, this is necessary in all units at all year levels.Ìý When students in Dan’s class were asked, ‘What strategies do you use to help you understand language in Math’s?’ They had the following to offer:

‘I ask if I don’t understand or find similar words and work it out.’

‘Re-read the question and highlight the words.’

‘Rephrase the question, highlight different words.’

The Year 7 students this year are taking part in the APSMO Maths Games during Terms 2 and 3.Ìý The Maths Games consists of four separate contests held approximately six weeks apart between May and September. The overall aim is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem-solving skills in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment. Upon completion of the contests, all students will receive a Certificate of Achievement from APSMO for their efforts.

Students gain the most benefit from the Maths Games by consistently working on a wide range of problem-solving questions over a period of time.Ìý The students have already had a few practice sessions where they have been taught the skills and techniques required to develop their maths problem solving skills. They have been working collaboratively, discussing problem solving strategies and trying as best they can to make their thinking visible to their teachers and classmates.

The Year 7 students have been placed in six teams. These teams consist of mixed abilities across the six Year 7 classes. The team names are: The Equationators, The Denominators, Arithmetic Acrobats, Matrix Mavericks, Fraction Force and Rhombus Rebels. All students receive points for their team for participation in the contests. Bonus points are scored for working out and obtaining the correct answer.Ìý

Students have been learning the language around ‘Chance’. They were given scenarios eg ‘You flip a coin and and get a tail’. Students had to stand next to one of the words on the given line (probability scale). eg highly likely. Part of this was justifying their decision.Ìý

The students also played a game called ‘Four Corners’. This was a game of Chance where cards were removed each time and students selected a ‘corner’ to stand. If they selected the correct corner, based upon what suit was selected, and what cards were still left, they earned a point.Ìý

Year 7 Numeracy

The Year 7 Numeracy class have been learning about Fractions.

One of the tasks was locating fractions on a number line. Four students placed a clothes peg to represent a fraction on a number line (rope) and their classmates voted on who they thought was the closest. Eg 3/4.

Students then had to manipulate the rope to work out who was placed the peg closest to the given fraction.

Year 7 Mathematics

The Year 7 students have been working on a task called, ‘Matchstick Pattern’ investigation.

The students had to create a pattern using matchsticks, create a set of values on a tables and use the coordinates to graph the rule which they had to determine.
