LIVING JUSTLY EXCURSION TO WELLSPRINGS FOR WOMEN

On Tuesday 5 May, 8 of our Living Justly leaders from Year 9 to Year 12 had the privilege of visiting Wellsprings for Women in Dandenong, one of the three Kildare Ministries community works. Wellsprings for Women is a place created by women, for women, offering safe, culturally responsive and flexible programs that empower women to live with dignity, free from violence and full of possibility.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed into the community. The students were guided through the organisation, meeting key staff, volunteers, and participants involved in the many programs and classes that make this organisation such a vital support network for women in the region.

This year, our Living Justly team focused on supporting the women of Wellsprings through a Mother’s Day initiative. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our school community, over 700 items were donated. These contributions allowed students to create 140 beautifully curated hampers, each paired with a heartfelt, handwritten card.

The gratitude expressed by the Wellsprings for Women community was profound. These were not just hampers; they were messages of solidarity, compassion and recognition. They were reminders that every woman deserves to feel valued and celebrated. The Living Justly leaders had the honour of hand delivering each hamper and participating in a Mother’s Day celebration filled with traditional food and cultural music. The quote “we arrived as strangers and left as friends” was the best way to express the spirit of the day.

This excursion marks the beginning of a strong and meaningful partnership between our school community and Wellsprings for Women. Throughout the year, we will continue to fundraise, with all funds to directly support Wellsprings for Women’s Holiday Program for Children. We will also be introducing an ‘action’ raising initiative, encouraging all members of our school community to walk in solidarity through action.

Our Living Justly leaders will be launching our partnership with Wellsprings in Week 4, so we invite our community to stay connected as this journey unfolds.

Shark Tank 2025 was a huge success! Students competed in groups, attempting to win the opportunity to go up on the Big stage to present to the four Sharks and earn an investment. All students were invested, demonstrating their Agency in Learning, their Collaboration, their Quality Thinking skills, and the Personal Development they had achieved throughoutthe year. What a celebration of talent, Catholic Social Teachings and what strengthand courage all our students displayed.

The Sharks, who gave up their time and invested their Shark dollars were Mr Holland, Ms Nolan (Year 8 Welcom) and Ruby and Lana (Year 12 School Captains). A huge thank you to them and the whole team who got shark tank up and running. Congratulations to the overall winners who pitched the idea of the “Fridge Wise”.

The UN Evatt Foundation have run a model UN Security Council across the state and country for many years. ĢƵ has hosted this event in Geelong for the past 3 years. Some of our Politics students have participated and gone through to the next round in Melbourne in previous years. This year The Geelong College and Kardinia International College along with ĢƵ competed. Each team of 2 represented a country that is currently on the United Nations Security Council. They had set resolutions that they debated, negotiated and ultimately voted on while practicing their diplomacy skills trying to gain support of other countries (teams) for amendments they deemed important for their country.

An excellent experience where students get to replicate what actually happens on the world stage in the UNSC, with students from other schools.

Last Thursday, 28 March, the house captains accompanied by Abbey and Ms Meg had the opportunity to attend the Women in Sport Breakfast with guest speaker and Olympic Gold medalist Noemie Fox. This was held at GMHBA stadium, with the goal of promoting women in sport among influential people in the Geelong community who are having an impact on promoting and increasing numbers of women in sport. A video was shown about the recent development at GMHBA stadium for the Cats AFLW side showcasing the new rooms, bathrooms, and parents room, all aimed at making the Women’s team feel like equals and like the stadium and the rooms is also suited to their needs.

However, the highlight of the morning was listening to Noemie Fox speak about her journey to the Olympics and the gold medal race. She spoke about her triumphs but also her challenges with losing events, missing out on selections and being the younger sister to a very impressive and elite athlete, Jess Fox, who also won two gold medals at the Paris Olympics. Noemie spoke about empowering women in her sport of Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross, and every day there are more young girls signing up to participate. A replay of her gold medal winning run was shown, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room! Noemie’s talk inspired all of us, to keep striving for our goals, keep putting in the hard work no matter the challenges, and take every opportunity we can. Finally, at the end of the breakfast we had the chance to meet Noemie and hold her Olympic gold medal, which was an incredible experience to be a part of as she was a lovely and motivational person to talk to. All of us were able to take something away from the breakfast to further improve our leadership skills at ĢƵ!

ĢƵ is proud of the work we do to support and develop connections with our First Nations students and families.

In the past couple of weeks we have supported two of our students to attend Herne Hill Primary School to deliver an Acknowledgement of Country. This was a great opportunity for our students to engage with culture and to connect to others in our community and is supported and encouraged by the College.

This week consisted of Close the Gap day and through our work at ĢƵ, we offer our First Nations students every opportunity to flourish. This is one way to address the ongoing disadvantage experienced by many First Nations people. However we acknowledge that there is still more work to be done at every level to achieve health equality for First Nations people by 2030.

On Monday 17 March two staff and a student attended Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative to participate in the weekly smoking ceremony. We will continue to attend this event throughout the year and we will offer this opportunity to all our First Nations students.

Aunty Sue Collins is here every Thursday to support us in our work and we feel so thankful to have her share her wisdom and knowledge with us. Thank you Aunty Sue.

The Living Justice Leaders, led by Year 12 students Sienna and Emma, successfully ran their first student-led initiative: the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale.

The event raised an impressive $437.10! All proceeds from the sale will support Saltbush, a vital community work offering respite and recreation for families and individuals facing challenges such as poverty, illness or disability.

As a ĢƵ community, we are excited to work towards our 2025 goal of raising $10,000 for this important community work. More details will be shared in the coming weeks.

A big thank you to the families who contributed baked goods and to the Living Justice Leaders for organising such a fantastic event!
