Where Science Can Take You – ĢƵ Alumni in Focus

This National Science Week, we’re celebrating four incredible ĢƵ alumni who are making their mark in the world of science.

From ĢƵ to Global Conservation – Meet Emma Day

Inspiring change from local roots to international waters!

As part of National Science Week, we’re proud to celebrate Emma Day (Class of 2009), whose career has taken her from the classrooms of ĢƵ to global climate and conservation leadership.

After studying biology at ANU and completing a Masters at Oxford, Emma’s journey led her through international NGOs and government, from marine plastic pollution to whale conservation.

Today, as Assistant Director at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Emma represents Australia in the International Whaling Commission, championing the global protection of marine species.

Her passion for science was sparked right here, especially through ĢƵ’s Sustainability Committee, where she first saw the power of local action.

Emma says “Don’t underestimate yourself and reach for opportunities outside your comfort zone,”

Let’s celebrate Emma and all the changemakers using science to build a better world.

Seeing Science Differently – Meet Madeline Baker

From ĢƵ classrooms to cutting-edge vision science, Madeline Baker (Class of 2015) is using her passion for health and biology to create real-world impact.

Madeline is currently undertaking a PhD exploring the link between eating disorders and ocular health, while also working in policy, advocacy, and teaching at Deakin University. She’s previously worked as a Research Fellow, Lecturer, and Optometrist in the public health sector.

Her scientific journey was sparked at ĢƵ, where Psychology, Biology, and Health inspired her future studies, and Further Maths laid the groundwork for her love of statistics.

A natural leader from her school days as Liturgy Leader and World Youth Day delegate, Madeline continues to lead in both the lab and the classroom.

And when she’s not researching or teaching, you’ll find her out exploring nature with her dog Maple!

Madeline shows us that science can take many forms and with curiosity, compassion, and courage, it can change lives.

Fighting Cancer with Science – Meet Maria Deronjic

From chemistry class at ĢƵ to the frontlines of breast cancer research, Maria Deronjic (Class of 2018) is using science to make a difference.

Maria is currently completing a Master’s degree focused on how manipulating metabolism could slow the progression of breast cancer. She’s deep in thesis writing (40,000 words!) and already turning heads, her recent research presentation was awarded the highest score out of 100 entries, competing against seasoned doctors and professors.

Her journey began with a spark for science in Chemistry and Biology classes at ĢƵ, inspired by teachers like Miss Tolan and Ms. Driessen.

Maria says: “I was captivated by science from a young age, it was clear my future would be in this field.”

Maria plans to continue her research, explore the world, and one day pursue a PhD. Her story is a powerful reminder that young scientists from all walks of life can lead the way in solving the world’s challenges.

Let’s cheer her on this National Science Week!

Powering Progress – Meet Lejla Makas

From ĢƵ to leading safety and environmental operations in Australia’s fuel industry, Lejla Makas (Class of 2006) proves that STEM can take you anywhere.

After starting a Commerce degree, Lejla realised her true passion lay in Chemistry and Maths -inspired by ĢƵ teachers like Ms Tolan and Mrs Curran. She pivoted into a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and never looked back.

Lejla’s trailblazing journey includes being one of the first female site operators in a petrochemical company and now leading a national team in Safety, Environment, Learning, and Emergency Management in the petroleum sector.

Lejla says: “Back yourself and give things a go. Don’t be afraid of STEM. These careers offer incredible opportunities and skills that can take you anywhere.”

This Science Week, we’re proud to highlight alumni like Lejla, whose determination and curiosity are fuelling change.

Year 12 – Applications for University, TAFE and other Higher Education Providers

The VTAC online application for our Year 12 students applying for further study at TAFE, University or other Independent Tertiary Providers opened on the 3rd August 2020. Timely applications close 30th of September 2020. Year 12 students will be required to pay a fee of $41.00 to VTAC for a ‘timely application’ to be processed.

Applicants must submit at least one preference and pay the fee to activate the VTAC process. Students can choose up to 8 preferences; however, they do not have to use all 8 in the application. Students should always list their preferences in the order of what they most want to study and where they most want to go and include only courses they would consider accepting. It is important that the preference list has pathway plans and includes a course considered a ‘sure thing’.

When students are reviewing their preferences, it is vital that they read the essential requirements and admission criteria for selection. Some courses require students to submit additional information early. The closing dates for some courses requiring additional information is as early as September! Essential requirements and admission criteria are listed in the course search details.

As part of the VTAC application process, students can apply for extra consideration through SEAS, Special Entry Access Scheme. There are four categories under which SEAS is granted, personal information and location, disadvantaged financial background, disability or medical condition and difficult circumstances. Three of these categories require additional information from the applicant. This should be actioned as early as possible. Further information regarding SEAS and other information pertaining to VTAC can be found on the VTAC website, .All students are encouraged to apply for Category ONE, personal information and location and Category FOUR, difficult circumstances.

Students have been briefed on the VTAC process.

Here are more information and viewing options:

Jess Gallagher, Graduate Year: 2007

After ĢƵ I studied a Bachelor of Law/Arts at Deakin University but after my first year, I realised law wasn’t my passion (despite absolutely loving VCE Legal Studies with Mr McCallum). I moved to Victoria University and began studying a Bachelor of Education, I even did one of my placements at ĢƵ! After graduating I spent a few years teaching in Victoria before I craved something different, packed up, and headed off to the Northern Territory in 2015. I spent 5 years as a teacher and principal in the remote community, Ampilatwatja.

I’m currently living in Darwin and completing a Master of Education in TESOL through Australian Catholic University. Next semester I’ll be working in the DoE office as a Wellbeing & Behaviour Advisor.

At ĢƵ, it wasn’t so much the subjects, but rather the teachers and the experiences at ĢƵ that led me to where I am now. The opportunity to visit Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) in Year 9 certainly had a significant impact on my life, as did Megan Evans and Michelle Brodrick’s passion for Indigenous Education.

Advice for ĢƵ students: Make the most of all that comes your way and truly cherish your ĢƵ years, you are so lucky to be a part of such a supportive and nurturing environment.

National Reconciliation Week message:
Always seek knowledge, educate yourself and get out there. Build relationships with your local co-op and share what you learn with your friends and family. Reconciliation is everyone’s business. This week I encourage you to read Stan Grant, watch In My Blood It Runs, listen to Thelma Plum, follow Brooke Blurton, buy from Clothing the Gap and explore.

Kellie Mayne, Graduate Year: 2007

After ĢƵ I took a gap year from Victoria University, packed my bags and went to work at Ltyentye Apurte Catholic School in the remote community of Santa Teresa, 80km south each of Alice Springs on Arrernte country. After a little while, I completed my Bachelor of Teaching degree through Charles Darwin University while working in the classroom in Santa Teresa. I moved into Alice Springs and began teaching at Yirara College which is a boarding school for Aboriginal students who come from all over Nothern Territory, some from Western Australia.

Currently, I am back working and living on Arrernte country at Ltyentye Apurte Catholic School in Santa Teresa. I am the Aboriginal Workforce Development Coordinator and Student Wellbeing Coordinator. I am also studying a Diploma in Early Childhood. I juggle my work part-time as well as family life – 2 beautiful Arrernte daughters.

The opportunity to visit Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) in Year 9, and again in Year 10 for Work Experience certainly had a significant impact on my life, as did Megan Evans and Michelle Brodrick and their passion for Indigenous Education. One subject that comes to mind is Black Tracks – which was an elective in Year 10 ran by these 2 amazing teachers. I think our year level was the first year that the subject ran.

Advice for ĢƵ students: Always be willing to try new things, step outside your comfort zone. You can do anything you want – you just have to put your mind and heart to it

National Reconciliation Week message:

Don’t just listen to the negative stories you hear about Aboriginal people. There are truly some amazing Aboriginal people doing wonderful things all over Australia. Educate yourself- if you want to know something, find out for yourself. If you’re interested in buying some traditional craft made by local men from Santa Teresa, jump ontoor some painted crosses painted by the ladies run by the Catholic Church, check out Santa Teresa Spirituality Centre Facebook page.
