Team Building and Surfing

Our Year 11 VCE VM and VPC students kicked off the year with an unforgettable team-building experience in Torquay with Go Ride a Wave. The day began with structured team-building activities that encouraged students to connect, communicate and support one another, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Students then truly stepped outside their comfort zones as they took to the water for a surfing lesson. With encouragement from staff, instructors and each other, students demonstrated outstanding resilience, perseverance and teamwork. The surf session was full of laughter, determination and constant peer support, with students cheering one another on and celebrating every success—big or small.

It was fantastic to see how positively students embraced the challenge and how naturally they worked together throughout the day. This experience has helped them form a cohesive and supportive team as they embark on their final senior years at ĢƵ. We couldn’t be more proud of the way they have started the year and the positive, inclusive culture they are building together.

Festive Fun with Gingerbread Creations!
Our VCE students have truly embraced the Christmas spirit this week, rolling up their sleeves and showcasing their creativity by crafting delightful gingerbread houses. These charming creations weren’t just about icing and lollies—they were a celebration of teamwork, imagination, and festive cheer.

The students worked carefully to design and decorate their houses, adding personal touches that made each one unique. From colourful candy roofs to intricate icing details, the results were nothing short of spectacular!

Once complete, the gingerbread houses were packaged up to take home, ready to bring joy to families and friends over the holiday season. It’s wonderful to see our students sharing their talents and spreading Christmas cheer beyond the classroom.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this activity possible—it’s these moments that make the end of the year so special.

A Celebration of Creativity: The 2025 VCE Art Exhibition

Last week, the ĢƵ Visual Arts Department proudly hosted our Annual VCE Year 12 Art Exhibition — a highlight on the school calendar that celebrates the creativity, dedication, and passion of our senior students.

This year’s exhibition was particularly special, marking the debut of our first-ever “Art Making & Exhibiting” Fashion Parade — an exhilarating showcase of handcrafted couture pieces designed and created by our talented Year 12 students. Each student worked with two models to present their garments as part of a curated display they designed, constructed, and styled themselves. The runway show was a thrilling success, with the audience captivated by the creativity and craftsmanship on display.

Adding to the excitement, our guest speaker, Anna Egberts, a ĢƵ alumna from the Class of 2007, shared her journey through the arts — from studying Visual Communication Design and English at ĢƵ to painting, exhibiting, and designing professionally for Geelong’s own Kaisercraft. Her energy and insight reminded everyone that creative pathways are not only viable but vibrant and full of opportunity.

Following the runway, the VCE Media students presented their short films in a cinematic showcase that transformed the Nagle Room into a glowing theatre space. The room was also home to our Visual Communication Design displays, featuring impressive architectural and product design models, and our Art Creative Practice students’ evocative bodies of work — a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, and photographs from Units 3 and 4.

The night was beautifully complemented by our Unit 3 Food Technology students, who catered the event with a spread inspired by their family recipes, reimagined into exquisite canapés and platters. Their contribution added warmth, hospitality, and a sense of shared celebration to the evening.

The festivities continued on Friday, as classes paused to take a walk through and a staff morning tea inviting our wider school community to view the exhibition. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff to connect with the creative outcomes of our senior students and to reflect on how artistic practice inspires innovation, problem-solving, and imagination across all learning areas.

Overall, the 2025 VCE Art Exhibition was a resounding success — a true celebration of our students’ vision, perseverance, and creative spirit.

VCE Food Studies Excursion last Thursday in Melbourne. We visited the Queen Victoria Market and then Ratio Cocoa Roasters. The Year 12 students were investigating food issues for their Unit 4 Written Report SAC. We were looking for examples of sustainability, ethics, food citizenship and food sovereignty at the market as part of our local food system.

We then took a quick tram trip up Sydney Road to the fabulous local chocolate maker Deb Makin @ Ratio Cocoa. We had a tour of the chocolate factory and then a tasting of the different aspects of this process.

We really had a terrific day and thank the students for their excellent engagement. We hope they have been inspired and enriched by this learning experience.

VCE Food Studies Excursion to Food Bank Drysdale

On Tuesday we travelled by school minibus to Drysdale to help at the Food Bank.

This Food Bank was established 25 years ago by Pastor Jake and his wife. Back then, someone said to him – “there are no poor people in Drysdale…” However, every week, 40 plus families come and get food from this service. On average, this lasts the family about 5 days. Another 40 families come the alternate week, so in a fortnight over 80 individuals and families are getting support from the Food Bank. They maintain a judgement free outlook for the families that come seeking support from the Food Bank and aim to help them as best they can by conducting interviews to determine what each family needs.

We helped unpack pantry goods and sort through fruit and veg, ready for the families to come through when the Food Bank opens their doors. Other students helped pack fridge and freezer boxes for the clients. We then had a look at the Community Garden that is also a part of this community service. Members of this garden grow for themselves and also for the Food Bank. It was wonderful to help out the volunteers for the morning and gain an understanding of how this very important community service is operated.

Special thanks to Ms Taylor for accompanying us with Mrs Mackenzie to be able to go out on this excursion. Learning about issues of Food Insecurity is part of the key knowledge in our Year 12 Food Studies.

Our Year 11 VCE-VM students recently embarked on an enriching hospitality immersion program, visiting three renowned venues in the Bellarine region: The Range @ Curlewis, Leura Park Estate, and Flying Brick Cider House.

At each location, students gained firsthand experience in various aspects of the hospitality industry. They engaged in tasks ranging from customer service to behind-the-scenes operations, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the field.

A highlight of the program was a presentation by Lynsey Sharp, owner of The Range @ Curlewis. Lynsey shared her personal journey in the hospitality industry, offering valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of running a successful business.

Throughout the experience, students demonstrated exceptional listening skills, enthusiasm, and a keen interest in learning. Their proactive approach and thoughtful questions reflected their genuine curiosity about the industry and its diverse career pathways.

This immersion program provided students with a unique opportunity to explore potential career avenues in hospitality, equipping them with practical knowledge and inspiration for their future endeavours.

We extend our gratitude to Lynsey Sharp and the teams at The Range @ Curlewis, Leura Park Estate, and Flying Brick Cider House for their warm hospitality and invaluable contributions to our students’ learning experiences.

STUDENTS DRIVING TO SCHOOL

We now have a small number of Year 12 students who have turned 18 and gained their driver’s licence! These students are able to drive to school but we ask that, as they can their licence, they message our Admin. Team Leader, Lesley De Noronha, via Teams to let her know they have started driving to school. This will allow Lesley to then send home an Operoo for parents to sign off on to confirm approval to drive has been granted.

WORK EFFORTS AT YEAR 12

We have noticed the continued application to their studies and work tasks by both VCE VM and VCE students across this term and wanted to both recognise these efforts and thank parents and families for your support in this as well. It has been quite hectic recently with a variety of work tasks and SACs falling due and we wanted to encourage all students to keep applying themselves as best they can.

Applications for tertiary studies will open next term and we will run information sessions and advertise “Open Days” at universities and TAFE institutions and colleges at that time.

As part of the Personal Development Area of Study 1: Personal Identity and Emotional Intelligence, the Year 11 VCE-VM class has completed individual art projects exploring the theme “WHO AM I.” This theme has meant a range of works is on display that showcases the individual student’s personalities, emotions, aspirations and inspirations.

Over the past few weeks, students dedicated considerable effort to both planning and creating their artwork. They showcased teamwork, organisational skills, artistic talent, and resilience throughout the process. The final pieces were both reflective and creative. Great work everyone.
