Student Reflection – Year 12 VCE-VM Student

On Tuesday 10 March 2026, the Year 12 VCE VM class successfully organised the 2026 ‘Bowls and Beats’ night. They worked incredibly hard; planning, preparing and applying their skills throughout the night to ensure the night’s success for the applied learning families, staff and students.

Throughout the night, everyone enjoyed a BBQ, salads and slices all prepared by the Year 12 students. It also featured a raffle and silent auction run by the class. During the night our mission was to raise money and awareness of all the work of Wellsprings for Women, where every dollar raised will help make a real difference in the lives of women in our community. We raised an outstanding amount of money – we are proud to announce that we raised approximately $2,000!

A big thank you to all the businesses that made all the generous donations and contributed to our night; Impression in hair, Ranch southern fried chicken, Post office Herne Hill, The Beauty Collective Geelong, Preloved Geelong, Tutti Pilates, Union Cellars – Herne Hill, Soft Caf?, Chemist Herne Hill, Box Office Caf?, Quirk, Locks of Grace, Gloss Nail Bar, Birkenstocks, Rothwell Run, Endota Spa, Ena Pelly, Harvey Norman Computers, Dizzy Toys.

And a big thank you to everyone who attended and showed their support.

Team Building and Surfing

Our Year 11 VCE VM and VPC students kicked off the year with an unforgettable team-building experience in Torquay with Go Ride a Wave. The day began with structured team-building activities that encouraged students to connect, communicate and support one another, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Students then truly stepped outside their comfort zones as they took to the water for a surfing lesson. With encouragement from staff, instructors and each other, students demonstrated outstanding resilience, perseverance and teamwork. The surf session was full of laughter, determination and constant peer support, with students cheering one another on and celebrating every success—big or small.

It was fantastic to see how positively students embraced the challenge and how naturally they worked together throughout the day. This experience has helped them form a cohesive and supportive team as they embark on their final senior years at ĢƵ. We couldn’t be more proud of the way they have started the year and the positive, inclusive culture they are building together.

Our Year 11 VCE-VM students recently embarked on an enriching hospitality immersion program, visiting three renowned venues in the Bellarine region: The Range @ Curlewis, Leura Park Estate, and Flying Brick Cider House.

At each location, students gained firsthand experience in various aspects of the hospitality industry. They engaged in tasks ranging from customer service to behind-the-scenes operations, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the field.

A highlight of the program was a presentation by Lynsey Sharp, owner of The Range @ Curlewis. Lynsey shared her personal journey in the hospitality industry, offering valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of running a successful business.

Throughout the experience, students demonstrated exceptional listening skills, enthusiasm, and a keen interest in learning. Their proactive approach and thoughtful questions reflected their genuine curiosity about the industry and its diverse career pathways.

This immersion program provided students with a unique opportunity to explore potential career avenues in hospitality, equipping them with practical knowledge and inspiration for their future endeavours.

We extend our gratitude to Lynsey Sharp and the teams at The Range @ Curlewis, Leura Park Estate, and Flying Brick Cider House for their warm hospitality and invaluable contributions to our students’ learning experiences.

STUDENTS DRIVING TO SCHOOL

We now have a small number of Year 12 students who have turned 18 and gained their driver’s licence! These students are able to drive to school but we ask that, as they can their licence, they message our Admin. Team Leader, Lesley De Noronha, via Teams to let her know they have started driving to school. This will allow Lesley to then send home an Operoo for parents to sign off on to confirm approval to drive has been granted.

WORK EFFORTS AT YEAR 12

We have noticed the continued application to their studies and work tasks by both VCE VM and VCE students across this term and wanted to both recognise these efforts and thank parents and families for your support in this as well. It has been quite hectic recently with a variety of work tasks and SACs falling due and we wanted to encourage all students to keep applying themselves as best they can.

Applications for tertiary studies will open next term and we will run information sessions and advertise “Open Days” at universities and TAFE institutions and colleges at that time.

As part of the Personal Development Area of Study 1: Personal Identity and Emotional Intelligence, the Year 11 VCE-VM class has completed individual art projects exploring the theme “WHO AM I.” This theme has meant a range of works is on display that showcases the individual student’s personalities, emotions, aspirations and inspirations.

Over the past few weeks, students dedicated considerable effort to both planning and creating their artwork. They showcased teamwork, organisational skills, artistic talent, and resilience throughout the process. The final pieces were both reflective and creative. Great work everyone.

Year 12 VM Literacy students, with the second year VET Certificate in Sport and Recreation class, travelled to Try Boys stadium this week to immerse themselves in wheelchair basketball. To support learning of the Unit 4 topic – Advocacy, students all had the chance to learn about the game, the chairs and background of the sport, as well as be expertly shown how to operate these specialised chairs and play a few games of wheelchair basketball. A huge thank you to Will, Kaye and Kerryn from Parallel Sports for sharing their skills and knowledge.

Parallel Sports Inc. is a self-help association that connects people with physical disabilities to sporting clubs, promoting the health benefits and community social network benefits through participation in sports which may or may not have an adaptive need, and establishing positive connected links for individuals in the greater community at large.

The Year 12 VCE VM Literacy class recently hosted guest speaker Senior Constable Dee Kuchenmeister from the Victoria Police Proactive Policing Community Engagement Unit.

Dee was a wealth of interesting relevant and helpful information to students on topics including: personal safety in the community – including when driving, on public transport, exercising and when out at night with friends. Also discussed was career opportunities and pathways in the Victorian Police force, as well as workplace safety – tips for responding to aggressive customers and how to recognise bullying and harassment including online examples and strategies to respond.

We are very grateful that Dee gave her time to spend the morning with the class.

The Year 11 VCE-VM had their Art Exhibition launch on Monday 18th March upstairs in the Brigidine Centre.

This Art Project is linked to Outcome 1- Personal Development Skills. The project’s aim was to encourage self-reflection of the students and allow them to reflect on what makes them up as an individual. They explored personal identity and displayed emotional intelligence throughout the drafting process all the way to their final piece. Students were able to choose a medium to work with to express to the audience “Who am I?”. The group should be proud of what they produced and the way they have embraced the project.

On Friday 15 March, the Year 11 VCE-VM class headed off to the Melbourne showgrounds to the Victorian Careers and Employment Expo. There were a wide range of different career stalls as well as career seminars. Some of the stall and seminars included Canada: jobs in demand and gap year, The Richmond Institute, Brandt Agriculture and many stalls displaying a variety of career opportunities. We all valued and loved this opportunity as we got to find out about both our chosen careers as well as other career industries that might one day interest us.
