The Growth Project Expo was a fantastic showcase of student learning and creativity. Parents were invited to view their children’s work, and the atmosphere was full of excitement and pride. Families enjoyed exploring the displays, and the addition of a coffee van and delicious food made by Year 8 students during their lunch time added to the community feel of the event.

The expo highlighted the effort and dedication students put into their projects, and it was rewarding to see parents engaging with the work and celebrating achievements. Events like this remind us how important it is to share our learning journey and to recognise the growth we’ve made in developing our agency.

A sincere thank you goes to the teachers and staff who guided us through the process, and to the parents who came along to support their children. Their encouragement and involvement made the day memorable and meaningful.

On Thursday August 7, the Year 8 cohort had the privilege of participating in a practice Growth Project Expo. At first, the experience felt a little overwhelming. The room was busy and full of hardly any empty tables, which made it hard to find a space to set up. Many of us weren’t sure what to say or how to present our projects confidently. However, once things got going, it became a valuable learning experience.

It was helpful to receive feedback from students, teachers and visitors about what we had done well and what we could improve for the final expo. We had Year 12 Vocational Major students come through, many Year 7 classes and a Year 9 Math’s class, plus many teachers, Learning Support Officers and support staff.

Seeing everyone else’s Growth Day projects was also inspiring. It was amazing to see how much progress others had made and the creative ways they were finding to help and support the community. – Jorja and Piper

Reflections on the experience and the journey from Year 8 students:

was proud of my courage and building of alliances when going back to Highton Primary School and talking to teachers and year 5 students, as well as the detail that I put into the succession plan for the art club. I hope the Year 5 students will be able to understand it and be able to use to make the art club successful but also use it for any other clubs they want to create.” – Milly

“We received a lot of feedback on how persistent and passionate we were with our project for example, establishing our GoFundMe, trying to volunteer at GAWS and trying many ways to get more clients for dog walking.” – Courtney

am proud of how I engaged with people I didn’t know and how I talked my way through the time” – Eve

Elements of agency I will focus on next:

want to be open to the new and being reflective because I don’t reflect much on the work I’ve done in the day. I want to be open to the new and overcome obstacles that could happen in my project”. – Peggy

“Being open to then new- I have been open to the new by going to the library and going out and doing stuff by myself and with Val; the elderly neighbour I am spending time with. I have also been open to the new because I have done a project that I haven’t done before and I’m putting myself out there.” –Amelia

“DEVELOPING SKILL OR CRAFT: I want to develop and focus on this agency in learning because in order to complete my growth project to full standard, I need to develop my skill of crochet and digital literacy in developing a storefront and further efforts to donate the money.

STRIVING FOR MASTERY: I am developing this agency in learning by trying to master crochet and the field of online marketing for my growth project to be as successful as possible.

DEMONSTRATING DRIVE: I chose this agency in learning because in this growth project, I am pursuing my community and personal ambitions, like working with donations for animal welfare and also my personal ambitions were to flourish within the community and expose myself to the world of being a business owner (selling accessories).” – Ruby

“We will focus on generating feedback because in our next expo we will use the feedback we have today and use it to make our presentation better and more interesting. We will also be working on making sure our grammar and our sentence make sense because when someone was reading it didn’t make sense.” – Eliza

In Year 8 Religious Education, students were asked to creative a ‘Fakebook’ profile on Jesus to demonstrate their understanding of the unit ‘Jesus the Revolutionary’. They needed to consider how Jesus was countercultural and who he challenged. This gave the students the chance to be creative, and the results were amazing. Here are a few snippets from their work.

Dear parents, we would like to bring to your attention some uniform concerns that we would ask that you attend to in the coming week and/or over the holiday break, if your young person is in breach of our expectations. Our aim is that you have been able to attend to each of these concern over the break, so that we are good to go for day 1 of next term – Monday 21 July.

If the uniform is not corrected, we will be asking our wellbeing teachers and subject teachers to record incidents for these breaches. Multiple incidents will result in a lunchtime reflection and/or another logical consequence issued and this could involve removing your young person from her scheduled classes until the concern is amended.

  • Blazers need to be worn to and from school on a daily basis and should be the visible outer garment when outside of the school grounds. With the cold weather now upon us it makes even more sense for the blazer to be worn.
  • Hoodies are not to be worn under the sports / academic uniforms. Again we understand that the weather has deteriorated this term and some students will be feeling the cold however it would be pertinent to have them wear an additional spencer or singlet to keep themselves warmer.
  • The collared white shirt needs to be worn with the winter uniform. We have seen an increase in the amount of students who are not wearing this shirt.
  • A selection of students are wearing non-ĢƵ trackpants with their sports uniform. This again needs to be addressed asap.
  • Additionally we continue to see students with nose-piercings and additional earrings and jewellery along with hair being worn out.

We have reattached the contact details for Noone (our preferred uniform supplier in Geelong) and Geelong Second-hand School Supplies (uniform).

Student Dress Code 2025 –

Respect – ‘Wear the correct uniform’ and ‘Represent the school with pride’

  • It is recommended that students wear the Summer uniform in Terms 1 and 4 and the Winter uniform during Terms 2 and 3, however due to unseasonal and changing weather conditions, either uniform can be worn during non-specified terms. Please note that the full summer uniform or full winter uniform may be stipulated for formal school events.
  • Summer dress length – Should be no shorter than touching the top of the knee.
  • College socks are grey with the Academic uniform and white with the Sports uniform. Black socks are not permitted nor is the wearing of white socks with the Academic uniform.
  • Blazers, school jumpers, rugby jumpers and spray jackets are not to be worn around the waist. School jumpers should also not be worn diagonally across the shoulder and waist.
  • Hair is to be neatly groomed, appropriate to the wearing of uniform. If hair is touching shoulders when sitting naturally, hair needs to be fully tied back and off the face at all times. When the hair is tied back, the accessory used must be maroon, green or white in colour.
  • Hair colouring should be kept natural in colour. Extreme colours (such as greens, blues, pinks and reds) are not appropriate. Students not complying with this requirement will be removed from their scheduled classes (internal suspension) until the hair colour is rectified. The parent /carer of the student will be required to attend a meeting with the WELCOM and a member of the Leadership Team to plan for this request to be addressed.
  • Two pairs of silver or gold sleepers or plain, small stud style earrings (two in each ear), is permissible. The sleepers should be no larger than a 5-cent piece. One small plain ring is permitted however it may need to be removed when doing sport or other physical activity. No other jewellery on any part of the body is to be worn (eg: nose rings and bracelets). A fine silver or gold chain can be worn around the neck featuring a small cross. Students not complying with this requirement will be removed from their scheduled classes (internal suspension) until these jewellery concerns are rectified. The parent /carer of the student will be required to attend a meeting with the WELCOM and a member of the Leadership Team to plan for this request to be addressed.
  • Makeup worn is to be minimal. No excessive make-up or false nails are to be worn. Natural coloured nail polish can be worn.
  • Clean black school shoes are to be worn correctly with academic uniform.
  • Each student is to have a College back pack. All students’ back packs, books, diary and school equipment are to be free from graffiti.
  • During Terms 1 and 4, it is highly recommended that the College hats are to be worn during recess and lunch and any classes held outdoors. If not wearing a hat, students are encouraged to sit in shaded spaces during Terms 1 and 4.
  • Tattoos are not endorsed by the College. At no time can tattoos be visible when students are in school uniform or attending school events.
  • Students may wear the full sports uniform on days for which they are timetabled to participate in Physical Education or Dance classes or as instructed by staff. Athletic shoes fit for purpose are to be worn in all sports classes. Leggings are not to be worn as the outer garment to and from school.
  • The college has a long sleeve sports top available for purchase therefore students should not be wearing long sleeve tops under their shorts sleeve sports tops.

From time to time there may be individual adjustments made in consultation with the College and families.

Students not complying with this requirement in an ongoing manner will be removed from their scheduled classes (internal suspension) until the uniform concern is rectified. The parent /carer of the student will be required to attend a meeting with the WELCOM and a member of the Leadership Team to plan for this request to be addressed.

Year 7 & 8 Community Connection periods Wednesday 7 May: Living Justice Living Peace

Saltbush is one of our Kildare Ministry Community Works that we are focusing on this year at ĢƵ, to raise awareness of what Saltbush do and raise funds to help them continue their work.

.

Saltbush is a place that honours the Presentation Sisters legacy, providing a sanctuary on 19 acres where care for people experiencing disadvantages intertwines harmoniously with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship amid a changing climate. Maree Feutrill from Saltbush facilitated an awareness and response session with year 7 and 8 students early this term.

Our year 7 students will tell you more about their session:

“Maree and Sue came to ĢƵ to talk about Saltbush. Saltbush is a place for people who are refugees or that have disabilities, mental health issues or family problems. There are heaps of natural and fun things to do to unwind”.– Skye

learnt that Saltbush is an organization that helps struggling families by giving them a holiday away from everything while also providing activities for guests while staying there. It is run by volunteers and donations.”– Ava

liked painting parts of nature. It was wonderful to do an activity that they do with the people in Saltbush. Saltbush is a terrific organisation that takes care of people in need.”– Lyah

“When Maree was talking about all of the types of families/people that stay at Saltbush it was nice, it made me feel happy that they help others with accommodation who need it or need a holiday. I enjoyed the painting activity, it made me feel calm.”– Tara

“This organization relies deeply on volunteers to support guest who need a long break due to their circumstances.”– Addalyn

think that it is a beautiful thing to be helping people that need that help, so I really enjoyed learning about Saltbush.”– Zara

“We learnt that it’s a place for people going through hard times who need a place to relax and get away from reality to enjoy some time with family.” – Abigail

“Saltbush taught us that there is help anywhere you go, that you will always be welcomed no matter who you are. Saltbush also encourages people to try to let loose, go out, and enjoy our beautiful world. They have a variety of people they support to help them from trauma or fear.“

– Yara

Maree from Saltbush had this to say about her time with us at ĢƵ: “The students were so lovely and engaging. I’m still blown away by some of the thoughtful questions asked by the Year 7 students!

Sue and I just felt so warmly welcomed by everyone and sensed a beautiful atmosphere at the school.

Nice to see so many teachers smiling and enjoying their work too.”

Thank you to Bridget Taylor our Living Justice Leader for leading our partnership with Saltbush on these days and to all the year 7 and 8 teachers who were involved.

The first class of the school day officially starts at 8.50am. It is our expectation that all students will have collected their class materials in advance of this time so that they are on time and ready to learnin class at 8.50. We understand that some students only get to school around this time because of bus delays, etc. however it is important that these students get to this first class as promptly as possible.

We have been moving students on from the Minerva Rd shops at around 8.40am so that they have time to meet this expectation of readiness to learn at 8.50 am. We do understand that some students will attempt to use the shops after 8.40am to purchase a snack or their lunch, however to avoid your young person being late to class, we are instructing them to go straight to school and access our school canteen during break 1 or lunch time. The canteen is equipped with a wide variety of food and drink options.

Having the shops so accessible is a resource that students at our school should recognize as a privilege. Access should not affect their capacity to get to class on time. Can you please assist us in reinforcing the need for your child/ren to be in class prior to 8.50am by talking to them about this expectation. We would appreciate your assistance to have them either bring their own food from home or by making sure that they have cash or some money on their school ID cards via CDF pay to enable them to access the canteen

Assistant Principal (Community and Culture)

Year 8 Reflection:

Jane Godwin, the author of the novel we are currently studying, When Rain Turns to Snow, visited our school and her talk was incredibly inspiring for us as Year 8 students. Her talk was engaging and gave us a deeper understanding of the writing process. We learned that she draws inspiration from her own experiences and the people in her life, which made her stories feel more real to us.

One of us mentioned, “It was cool knowing where she got character inspiration from.” Another student shared, “I thought it was interesting to hear her perspective on the characters and to see how she viewed their physical appearances.”

We were surprised to learn that characters in When Rain Turns to Snow are based on real people and events from her life. Listening to her talk about character development and how she uses personalities of people she knows in her books was fascinating.

“Listening to a published author talk about her books is inspiring,” one of us noted.

Although some of her responses to our questions left room for interpretation, it added to our understanding of the book.

Overall, Jane Godwin’s visit fuelled our imagination and provided valuable insights into the world of writing. We are eager to hear from her again in the future.

Ms Sullivan’s Year 8 English class

Year 9 Reflection:

On February 25th, the Year 9 students were fortunate to receive a visit from renowned author and publisher Jane Godwin. She shared her expertise on survival stories, offering valuable insights into both the writing and publishing process. Drawing from her own experiences, Godwin provided us with a deeper understanding of what makes a compelling survival narrative.

Throughout the session, we explored key storytelling techniques and gained knowledge that will be valuable for our upcoming English unit.

Her visit not only expanded our creative skills but it also was an inspiring and enriching experience that benefited us all.

With basically only 3 weeks of school left in this school year we would ask that parents / carers please do a check of your young persons drawers at home to check that they have a selection of grey school socks for the Academic uniform and white socks for the Sports uniform. We are seeing an increase in the amount of students who are wearing black socks with their sports uniform and the white and black socks have been appearing with the academic uniform. If you could make sure that they are in the correct socks before they leave the house that would be appreciated.

Staff and in particular Wellbeing teachers are being reminded to do a check in the morning and then record a Uniform Breach incident in Simon if students are out of uniform therefore you should be getting these notifications via email after 4pm. Multiple uniform infringement will mean that a student will be issued to a Lunchtime Reflection on a Tuesday or Thursday.

At ĢƵ we strive to foster a sense of connection, belonging and purpose. The College uniform is an important way of developing a sense of group identity. Wearing the ĢƵ uniform with pride signifies each student’s willingness to learn and their commitment to the ĢƵ community.

On Thursday 31 October, the Year 8 students participated in their Big Day Out ‘Sweat Retreat’ led by the 8 Purple Project Team – Odessa, Madi, Marli and Eloise. This was part of our Humanities unit of work – budgeting and planning a day out for students.

Student feedback / highlights included:

‘When we walked into the Chocolate Factory, you saw lots of chocolate and we learnt how it was made. We could taste ice-cream, chocolate and even had hot chips for lunch. We could touch chocolate, hear people talking and laughing and smelt the sea.’

‘The Year 8 students went to Torquay Beach, it smelt like salty sea water and you could see people swimming. There was a battle of building sandcastles to win first place for lollies.’

‘We went to the beach and then the Chocolate Factory. At the beach we saw the beautiful water – there was lots of talking and laughing.’

‘The day was wonderful, we made new friends, we all got along, everyone enjoyed the ‘Tug of War’, we were engaged and participating.’

‘We made chocolate lollypops and decorated them – I am very proud of mine.’

‘Everyone was grateful and saying thank you for the great day.’
