Our course this semester dove into Arab culture as a way of deepening our appreciation of and functioning in a language. We’ve conversed with an Arab, learnt the art of calligraphy, cooked Arabic dishes, explored Islam on an excursion to the Islamic Museum of Australia and eaten lunch in an Arab restaurant. Our final artistic activity has seen the 13 students in pairs designing Arabic henna patterns on fingers and hands. Students refer to a design and carefully squeeze henna, a paste derived from dried leaves of lawsonia inermis tree. The often intricate and always startling pattern remains on the skin for around three days. Hennah cones are readily available at Indian produce supermarkets of Geelong. A big شكراً to the Art Department for hosting our class in the Art Room.

مع السلامة!

Monday 17 November saw our Year 9 Introduction to Arabic students undertaking an excursion to investigate social aspects connected to the Arabic language. Islam and food are elements of culture integral to how Arabic has spread throughout the world. Students were given a guided tour of the fascinating Islamic Museum of Australia in Thornbury, discovering how the Arabic language is functionally connected to the five pillars of Islam. Students learnt that many words used in English are of Arabic origin; sugar, algebra, jasmine being examples. At midday the students moved to the nearby A1 Bakery where we ordered Lebanese dishes for lunch, including hummus, fool, tea and manqoosha. A big شكراً to the Languages Department for organising this enriching experience.

On Wednesday 12 November our Year 9 Introduction to Arabic students undertook an Arabic cooking activity. The 13 students prepared tabouleh, hummus and flat bread. These lunch and dinner dishes are common to Arabic speaking countries from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east. The hands-on session prepares students for the excursion to the Islamic Museum of Australia and the A1 Bakery Restaurant in Week 7, as well as complementing language studies by exploring culinary traditions of the Arab world.

Students worked collaboratively to prepare the dishes, each of the three groups preparing a separate dish. Once cooked, students sat together to enjoy tasting and sharing their creations.

A big شكراً to the Languages Department for organising this enriching experience, and to the Food Technology people for supporting the activity.

Last term, the Year 9 level were involved in a fundraiser for Saltbush. This organisation provides accommodation for respite and those experiencing family crisis and hardship, support for employment and programs for families from refugee backgrounds. Individuals are given an opportunity they wouldn’t normally have, or be able to afford, in tranquil surroundings over at the Peninsula. A space is provided to rest, recharge, and regain the strength needed to navigate life’s challenges. We were lucky enough to have some of the volunteers from Saltbush come to ĢƵ and talk to the year level to explain what they do.

In groups, students created an Awareness Campaign, that focused on the impacts and possible actions for different social issues that Saltbush deal with through their referral partners. We also analysed the catholic social principles, gospel values and Bishop’s statements. We began to understand the importance of what we referred to as “spirituality of responsibility” in the unit. Students created many different stalls such as bake sales, lolly jars, raffles, a photo booth and a sausage sizzle. There were 36 stalls at the fundraiser on the last day of term. We sought donations and created checklists to organise our stalls and highlight the campaigns we created. With help from the ĢƵ community and staff, the Year 9 students were able to raise almost $5000 from this initiative towards the total of $10,000 that ĢƵ raised overall to support Saltbush.

On the day of the stalls, the atmosphere was great. It was sunny, and there was music bringing a fun vibe. Students enjoyed the festive atmosphere and had many selections to choose from. The afternoon brought the whole ĢƵ community together. Overall, this day was an exciting way to help people in need and bring ĢƵ students and staff together.

Well done to all the Year 9 students and the staff involved. It was an amazing result.

Our Year 9 students recently took part in an exciting Building Careers Immersion at The Gordon TAFE, where they explored a range of hands-on activities designed to give them a real taste of working in the trades. Throughout the day, students tried their hand at practical skills such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, while learning directly from industry experts who shared their experiences and career journeys.

A key focus of the immersion was highlighting the growing opportunities for women in trades, particularly in the Geelong region, where job growth in this sector continues to rise. Students also had the valuable opportunity to network with potential employers, building connections that could support future pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships, and further study.

The day was an inspiring and practical experience, helping students to see the wide range of possibilities available in the building and construction industry while encouraging them to start thinking about their own career goals.

An Introduction to Arab Calligraphy.

The 13 students of the Year 9 Introduction to Arabic undertook a two introduction to Arab calligraphy with artist Zahidah Zeytoun Millie. Students are into their eighth week of learning Standard Arabic and have already learnt eight of the 28 letter alphabet: أ, ب, ت, ث, ج, ح, خ, ن

Zahidah introduced students to Kufic, Kairouani, Thuluth, Maghrebi, Diwani and Ruq’ah styles of writing. Then, we were straight into the progression from pencil, through calligraphy pen to quill and ink. We also used a stencil and spray paint to produce large scale stylised and coloured letters. Students plan to display work produced in the Library in Week 9.

The class is very grateful to Zahidah for sharing her expertise, and to Danyl Lunardelli and Joanna Wiltshire of the Art Department for supporting the class. Projects for Term 4 include a cooking lesson to make tabbouleh and an excursion to the Islamic Museum of Australia in Coburg.

As part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) program, Year 9 students will soon take part in a short series of Wellbeing Lessons focused on Managing Friendships – Coping with Conflict and Exclusion.

These 10-minute sessions are designed to support students in exploring what makes a healthy friendship, how to manage conflict respectfully, strategies for dealing with exclusion, repairing friendships, and setting healthy personal boundaries.

This work directly connects to our ĢƵ expectations of Respect and Resilience. By learning practical skills to communicate their feelings, navigate challenges, and include others, students strengthen their capacity to build respectful relationships. At the same time, they develop the resilience needed to manage ups and downs and bounce back from setbacks in their friendships.

We encourage families to continue these conversations at home by asking your child what they are learning about friendships, and how these strategies can be used in their daily lives. Together, we can support our students to grow into young people who live out our values both at school and beyond.

Last Friday, the Year 9 Leadership Team joined with other Geelong Catholic Secondary School leaders. We had the opportunity to visit Sacred Heart College to learn about the work of MacKillop Family Services.

Throughout the day, we joined group discussions and listened to inspiring speakers who shared stories about the hardships and challenges faced by children and families experiencing trauma and how Mackillop Family Services provides support and care for those young people and their families. Teaching them fundamental skills for the future, allowing them access to education and providing them with a safe environment and much needed emotional care. This visit gave us the opportunity to reflect and discuss on how we can support and offer help to those in similar need. Using this as our inspiration we brainstormed ideas and developed initiatives we could bring back to ĢƵ.

We propose to run a School Supplies Drive and Christmas present donation tree which both aim to help others who are less fortunate and make a difference in our community. This day provided us with the opportunity to network with students from different schools, to self reflect, and empathise towards the many children and families that are living a more challenging life than us.

This empowered us with the confidence and drive that we can make a difference be it small or large, every little bit helps.
